A High-Profile Project Hits a Rough Patch
The Trump Reflecting Pool renovation, championed by President Donald Trump to refresh one of Washington’s most iconic landmarks, is running into visible trouble. With the nation’s 250th anniversary of independence fast approaching, the blue paint coating the famous pool is now peeling — adding an unexpected blemish to a project meant to showcase the capital at its best.
What was intended as a patriotic upgrade has instead become a source of headlines and online ridicule.
Swampy Water and Flaking Paint
On June 19, an AFP photographer captured workers pumping flakes of blue paint out of the pool, along with green algae that had bloomed since the structure was recently refilled. The combination turned the water a murky, swamp-like color — far from the crisp reflective surface the project promised.
The peeling paint appears to be a widespread problem along the entire 610-meter length of the pool. The issues have been documented extensively by news outlets and social media users over the past several days.
In one particularly mocking moment, someone traced the word “TRUMP” into the green scum coating the pool’s bottom, where the blue paint had grown patchy.
Trump Blames Vandalism
President Trump pushed back on the criticism in a June 19 post on his Truth Social platform, attributing the problems to “vandalism.”
He sought to reassure the public that the situation was under control, stating that the algae was “75 per cent gone” and that conditions would soon be fully remedied. According to Trump, the vandalized section represented only a small area of damage that would be repaired early next week. He also noted that law enforcement was “actively investigating” the matter.
Part of a Larger Vision for Washington
The repainting effort, reportedly costing around US$14 million, fits into Trump’s broader campaign to leave his personal mark on the nation’s capital. Other elements of that vision include:
- A new ballroom at the White House
- A massive arch planned near the Potomac River
Under Trump’s direction, the long rectangular pool — designed to mirror the Washington Monument on the National Mall, near the Lincoln Memorial — was drained and coated in a shade he calls “American flag blue.”
Hallowed Ground
The location carries deep historical significance. It was from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, overlooking this very pool, that civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his legendary “I Have A Dream” speech in 1963 before a crowd of several hundred thousand people.
That history adds extra weight to the scrutiny surrounding the renovation, especially with such a major milestone on the horizon.
A Deadline Looms
On July 4, the United States will commemorate 250 years since signing its Declaration of Independence from Britain. With that landmark celebration just weeks away, the pressure is on to resolve the pool’s problems quickly.
For now, the peeling paint and stubborn algae serve as an awkward reminder that even high-profile renovations can hit murky waters — quite literally — before the finish line.
