Three Generations of One Family Killed in Upstate New York Plane Crash

A devastating upstate New York plane crash has claimed the lives of three generations of a single New Jersey family, including a two-year-old toddler. The small twin-engine aircraft plummeted into the woods near Saranac Lake on Monday night, leaving a community and a wide circle of friends and patients in mourning. The heartbreaking tragedy now sits under federal investigation as authorities work to understand what went wrong.

The Victims

According to state police, three members of the same family were killed in the crash. Each represented a different generation, making the loss all the more profound.

The victims were identified as:

  • Dr. Gabriele Jasper, 70, the grandfather and pilot
  • Gabriella Hillgrube, 33, his daughter
  • Guiliana Hillgrube, 2, his granddaughter

The family’s connection spanned not only generations but also their professional and personal lives, deepening the sense of loss felt by those who knew them.

How the Crash Unfolded

The tragedy occurred shortly after 10:30 p.m. on Monday night. Dr. Jasper was piloting a small 1976 Piper Aerostar 601P, having departed from Adirondack Regional Airport.

According to authorities, the situation turned catastrophic almost immediately after takeoff. Jasper lost contact with ground communication after reaching an altitude of just 100 feet, and the aircraft crashed into the woods below.

Search crews later located the plane, which had been destroyed by the fiery impact. The severity of the crash underscored just how quickly the flight had gone from routine to fatal.

A Respected Doctor and Devoted Family Man

Dr. Jasper was far more than a pilot enjoying a nighttime flight. Based in Toms River, he was an award-winning spine doctor and anesthesiologist who had built a distinguished career in medicine.

He founded the Jasper Spine Institute, which operates two facilities described on the practice’s website as state-of-the-art, located in Brick and Milltown. His reputation extended well beyond his local community, earning him recognition as one of the top specialists in his field.

Outside of work, Jasper embraced life with evident passion. He frequently shared his adventures on Facebook, posting about his expeditions to the Adirondacks, his love for Formula 1 racing, and photos of himself out fishing.

A Daughter Following in Her Father’s Footsteps

Gabriella Hillgrube, of Forked River, shared a close bond with her father that extended into their professional lives. She worked alongside him at the Jasper Spine Institute.

On social media, she often revealed her devotion to her family, posting affectionate photos in which she smiled alongside her young daughter, Guiliana, and her husband, Tyler. Those images now stand as poignant reminders of a family full of love and joy.

Tributes Pour In

News of the crash prompted an outpouring of grief from those who knew Dr. Jasper. Among them was friend and former co-worker Chris Alderucci, who paid tribute in a heartfelt Facebook post.

Alderucci described Jasper as a very good friend and one of the world’s top endoscopic surgeons for spinal stenosis and disc degeneration. He painted a vivid picture of a man who lived life in the fast lane, embracing his love of racing cars, riding motorcycles and boats, and flying his airplane and helicopter.

Yet above all those passions, Alderucci emphasized, Jasper cherished his life, his family, and his friends. He remembered the doctor as one of the most genuine surgeons who truly cared about his patients and the staff who worked with him. Alderucci noted that surgeons and patients around the world would be saddened by the news, closing his tribute with an affectionate farewell to his friend.

An Ongoing Investigation

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. The National Transportation Safety Board has taken up the case, working to piece together the sequence of events that led to the aircraft’s fatal descent.

For now, many questions remain unanswered, including what may have caused Jasper to lose contact with the ground so soon after takeoff.

A Community in Mourning

The loss of three generations in a single moment has left an indelible mark on all those connected to the Jasper family. From patients whose lives were improved by Dr. Jasper’s skill to friends who admired his zest for life, the ripple effects of this tragedy extend far and wide.

As the investigation continues, those who knew the family are left to grieve and remember. The crash serves as a sobering reminder of how quickly life can change, and of the profound impact one family can have on a community. Their memory, marked by dedication, love, and a passion for living fully, will endure among the many who mourn their loss.
