British-Iranian Man Arrested in RAF Fairford Probe as UK Police Examine Possible Foreign State Role

The RAF Fairford investigation has taken a significant turn. British counter-terrorism police have arrested a 25-year-old man with dual British and Iranian nationality, adding a sensitive new dimension to a case that officials already describe as hugely complex.

The Latest Arrest

The man was detained in London on Thursday on suspicion of preparing acts of terrorism under Section 5 of the Terrorism Act 2006. Police initially gave his age incorrectly and later corrected it.

A second man, aged 26 and a UK national, has also been questioned under caution. Officers have searched two properties as part of the inquiry.

How the Case Began

The investigation traces back to September 27, when police received a report of suspicious vehicles near RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire. The base is used by the US Air Force.

Five UK nationals from London were detained at the time. They were first arrested on suspicion of offences under the Explosives Act, and the allegation was later changed to preparation of a terrorist act. All five have since been bailed, though they remain under investigation.

What Police Are Saying

Vicki Evans, the Senior National Coordinator for Counter Terrorism Policing, said specialist teams are pursuing multiple lines of inquiry. She stressed that police are examining every possible angle, including the chance that a foreign state was involved. She also thanked the public for their patience while the work continues.

The wording is careful. Looking at an angle is not the same as confirming it, and no charges have been announced in connection with any foreign government.

The Political Backdrop

The political temperature is high. On Wednesday, Prime Minister Andy Burnham told the BBC that Britain believes Iran played a part in the incident. Tehran has denied involvement.

The context matters here. Earlier this year, Britain allowed the US Air Force to use RAF Fairford for what were described as defensive strikes against Iran. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps had already warned the UK that British bases used by American forces for such operations would be considered legitimate targets.

Why This Case Matters

Several threads make this investigation closely watched:

  • A military base used by US forces sits at the center of the case
  • Officials are openly considering a possible state link
  • Britain is already tied into the wider confrontation with Iran through its support for US operations
  • Multiple arrests and property searches show the inquiry is widening

What to Watch Next

In the coming days, attention will likely focus on a few key questions:

  • Whether any suspects are formally charged
  • What evidence emerges about the suspicious vehicles and the alleged plans
  • Whether investigators can substantiate any foreign state involvement
  • How London and Tehran respond diplomatically as the facts develop

The Bottom Line

For now, the picture remains incomplete. Arrests have been made, properties searched and suspects questioned, but many answers are still missing. What is clear is that this inquiry sits at the crossroads of domestic security and a tense international standoff, and the outcome could shape relations between Britain and Iran for some time.
