Conan O’Brien Returns as Oscars Host 2027: Third Year in a Row Confirmed by Disney
Conan O’Brien Oscars Host duty is officially extending into a third consecutive year. Disney made the announcement on Tuesday during its upfront presentation, confirming that the beloved comedian will once again steer Hollywood’s biggest night when the 2027 Academy Awards roll around.
Mark Your Calendars: March 14, 2027
The 99th Academy Awards will broadcast live on ABC and stream on Hulu on March 14, 2027, starting at 7 p.m. ET, which translates to 4 p.m. on the West Coast. For O’Brien, this marks his third straight year guiding the show, a level of consistency that the Oscars have not enjoyed with a single host in quite some time.
Craig Erwich, president of Disney Television Group, summed up the network’s enthusiasm.
“Conan has created remarkable energy around the Oscars,” he said, adding that O’Brien’s distinct comedic voice has turned the broadcast into one of the most entertaining nights of the year.
A Familiar Team Returns Behind the Scenes
O’Brien is not the only returning name. The Academy and ABC are sticking with a winning lineup behind the camera as well.
- Raj Kapoor and Katy Mullan have been re-signed as producers for a fourth consecutive year.
- Jeff Ross and Mike Sweeney return as producers for a third year in a row.
- Sweeney will also contribute as a writer for the ceremony.
Kapoor and Mullan offered glowing praise for their host, describing him as a creative partner who blends sharp humour with genuine warmth. They highlighted how easy and enjoyable he makes the production process, both backstage and on stage. The pair said they were grateful for the ongoing collaboration and excited about what is coming next.
Film Academy CEO Bill Kramer and president Lynette Howell Taylor echoed that sentiment. They credited O’Brien and the producing team for delivering captivating, heartfelt shows over the past two years and expressed confidence that he will once again lead the celebration with intelligence and humour.
A Pattern of Repeat Hosts in Awards Season
O’Brien returning for a third Oscars run also continues a notable industry trend. For the third year running, both the Golden Globes and the Oscars will have repeat emcees. Nikki Glaser, who has already hosted the Globes twice, recently signed up to return for a third time as well.
While O’Brien’s 2027 announcement came a little later than his 2026 re-up, which was confirmed barely two weeks after the 2025 ceremony, ABC and the Academy have once again wrapped up their hosting decision well in advance.
Critics Saw the Renewal Coming
The decision to bring O’Brien back was hardly a surprise to those who watched his most recent outing. In his review of the 2026 Oscars for The Hollywood Reporter, chief TV critic Dan Fienberg called O’Brien “very good” in his second appearance and predicted that the Academy would move fast to invite him back.
That prediction has now played out almost exactly as expected.
Why O’Brien Keeps Saying Yes
Hosting the Oscars is often described as a thankless job. The pressure is enormous, the audience is vast, and the criticism can be brutal. Yet O’Brien has continued to embrace it with full enthusiasm.
Jeff Ross, his longtime executive producer and close friend, said in a recent interview that O’Brien himself was the driving force behind taking on the gig in the first place.
“When the first offer came in, I told him, ‘You don’t need to do this, you’ve got nothing to prove,’” Ross recalled. After stepping away from late-night television, the goal had been simple: only do projects they actually wanted to do. Hosting the Oscars, it turned out, was exactly what O’Brien wanted.
O’Brien himself has offered a more colourful explanation. He talks about a “little bearded Viking” living inside him, an inner voice that has been there since he was ten years old. When that Viking decides something is worth doing, he says, that is what happens. It has guided him through replacing David Letterman with almost no experience, skiing slopes he has no business attempting, and yes, hosting the Oscars.
A Mixed Picture on Ratings
The hosting choice comes against a slightly uneven ratings backdrop. The 2025 Oscars marked a post-pandemic high, drawing 19.69 million viewers. The 2026 telecast saw that number dip to 17.86 million, a drop of around 9 percent.
Still, in an era where live broadcasts of all kinds are battling for attention, those numbers remain significant, and the Academy appears confident that O’Brien is the right voice to keep audiences engaged.
A Transitional Era for the Oscars
The 2027 ceremony also lands at an interesting moment in the awards show’s long history. It will be the second-to-last edition of the Oscars to air on ABC and Hulu before YouTube takes over the broadcast starting with the 101st ceremony in 2029.
There is also a change of scenery on the horizon. The 2027 show will be the second-to-last Oscars to take place at the Dolby Theatre, its longtime home in Hollywood. The 101st Oscars will move to the Peacock Theater, marking a significant shift for a ceremony that has become synonymous with the Dolby.
A Steady Hand During a Period of Change
In many ways, O’Brien’s continued presence is a sign of stability during a period when nearly everything else around the Oscars is shifting, from where you can watch it to where it is filmed. With a familiar host and a trusted production team locked in, the Academy is signalling that even as the surroundings evolve, the core experience of Hollywood’s biggest night will stay in confident, comedic hands.
