Miracle on Everest: Guide Given Up for Dead Found Alive After Six Days

A Story of Survival Against the Odds

The Miracle on Everest unfolded when a Nepali climbing guide who everyone believed had perished was discovered alive, slowly making his way down toward Base Camp. Six days after he was last seen, Dawa Sherpa defied every expectation and returned from a part of the mountain where survival alone is considered nearly impossible.

For days, his family, fellow climbers, and rescue teams had little reason to hope. Yet against all logic, he was found crawling down the ice, frostbitten but breathing, conscious, and remarkably stable.

Who Is Dawa Sherpa?

Dawa Sherpa, aged 52, is an experienced high-altitude guide widely respected in the mountaineering community. He is also known as “Hillary Dawa Sherpa,” a nickname inspired by the legendary mountaineer Edmund Hillary, the first man to summit Everest alongside Tenzing Norgay.

Over his career, Dawa had completed countless climbs and descents, earning a reputation for resilience and skill. That experience may well have been the difference between life and death during his six days lost on the mountain.

The Disappearance Above Camp 3

Dawa was last seen alive while descending after a successful summit. At an altitude of roughly 7,500 metres (around 24,600 feet), above Camp 3, he reportedly stopped to rest.

Chris Thrall, a fellow climber and former British Royal Marine, was one of the last people to speak with him. As the group made their way down from Camp 4 — the final campsite before the summit — Dawa paused with his backpack to catch his breath.

Thrall recalled checking on him. He asked if Dawa was alright, and Dawa waved him forward, insisting he was fine and telling him to keep going. There was nothing unusual about the exchange; the two had separated and regrouped many times before during difficult descents.

But this time, Dawa never caught up.

A Brutal Climb

The conditions that season were punishing. According to Thrall, what should have been a five-day round trip to the summit and back stretched into an exhausting eleven-day ordeal. The thin air, fatigue, and harsh weather pushed everyone to their limits.

As Thrall continued his descent, he encountered a struggling Polish climber from their group, and the two pressed on together. The decision not to turn back haunted him, though it was rooted in hard experience. Dawa had survived similar situations hundreds of times before, and many assumed he would simply appear again, as he always had.

Mourning Before the Miracle

As the days passed with no sign of him, hope faded. The air at that altitude is so thin that surviving alone for long is almost unheard of.

Believing the worst, those close to Dawa began to grieve:

His wife reportedly offered last rite prayers for his soul, preparing herself for a future without him.

Chris Thrall posted an emotional tribute on Instagram, honouring the man he believed had died on the mountain.

Relatives waited anxiously, some frustrated by what they felt was a slow start to search efforts.

One relative openly criticised the pace of the rescue operation in an interview with an adventure publication, voicing the kind of anguish that comes when every hour feels critical.

Found Alive in the Khumbu Icefall

Then came the moment no one expected. On Thursday, a cleaning crew working on the mountain spotted a figure slowly sliding down through the treacherous Khumbu Icefall, heading toward Base Camp.

It was Dawa.

He had frostbite on his hands, but otherwise appeared to be in surprisingly good condition. Rescuers from 8K Expeditions, the company overseeing the search, were able to reach him and airlift him to safety.

Pemba Sherpa, executive director of 8K Expeditions, described the rescue as almost beyond belief. He noted that, to his knowledge, no one had ever survived alone at that altitude on Everest for so long. He suspected Dawa had sheltered inside abandoned tents along the route to stay protected from the deadly cold, calling the entire ordeal a genuine self-rescue.

Recovery and Relief

Dawa was taken to HAMS Hospital in Kathmandu, where he is now receiving treatment in the intensive care unit. According to one of the doctors there, he is awake, responsive, and able to speak.

His daughter visited him and shared the family’s overwhelming relief. She said her father recognised her, was talking, and seemed to be doing well. After days of fearing the worst, their grief had turned into gratitude.

A Deadly but Record-Breaking Season

While Dawa’s story ended in joy, this Everest season has been marked by tragedy as well. Five people have died so far, including three Nepalis involved in expedition preparations.

At the same time, the season set a new record. More than 1,000 climbers reached the summit, making it the busiest year ever documented on the world’s highest peak. The combination of soaring numbers and dangerous conditions highlights both the enduring allure and the very real risks of Everest.

Why This Story Matters

Dawa Sherpa’s survival is more than a headline. It is a powerful reminder of human endurance, experience, and the will to live. Stranded alone in one of the most hostile environments on Earth, he managed to keep himself alive long enough to walk back toward his rescuers.

His story stands as a testament to the skill of Nepal’s mountain guides, who routinely risk their lives to help others reach the summit — and who, in this case, became the subject of a survival tale that few will forget.

For now, the mountaineering world is simply grateful. A man believed lost to the mountain has come home, turning what felt like a tragedy into a true miracle on Everest.
