The Princess Bajrakitiyabha death has cast new uncertainty over Thailand’s royal succession, after the eldest daughter of King Vajiralongkorn passed away at 47 following more than three years in a coma, the royal household announced.
A Long Decline
Princess Bajrakitiyabha collapsed in December 2022 while exercising her dogs. Her doctors attributed the episode to a severely irregular heartbeat brought on by a mycoplasma infection in her heart.
In a statement released Friday morning, the palace said its medical team had provided the closest and most intensive care possible, but her condition continued to decline. She died at 19:48 local time the previous day at Chulalongkorn Hospital.
With her passing, the Thai royal family has lost its most visibly accomplished member, and a figure who might have played a pivotal role in a succession that remains far from settled.
An Accomplished Life
Born on 7 December 1978, Princess Bajrakitiyabha was the eldest of King Vajiralongkorn’s seven children, born to his first wife and cousin, Princess Soamsawali.
She built an impressive career rooted in law and public service. After training as a lawyer and earning two postgraduate degrees from Cornell University in the United States, she worked briefly at the Thai mission to the United Nations in New York before returning home to serve in the Attorney-General’s offices in Bangkok and elsewhere across the country.
From 2012 to 2014, she served as Thailand’s ambassador to Austria, where she developed a relationship with the UN Office on Drugs and Crime. During that time, she began speaking out on the need for penal reform, with a particular focus on vulnerable women who end up incarcerated. Thailand has one of the highest populations of female inmates in the world.
Back in Thailand, she took on the role of the UNODC’s Ambassador for the Rule of Law in Southeast Asia and continued advocating for reform of the country’s criminal justice system, where severe sentences are frequently imposed for relatively minor drug possession offenses.
Close Ties to the Throne
Her relationship with her father appeared especially close. In 2021, the king appointed her chief of staff in his private bodyguard unit, granting her the rank of general. A dedicated fitness enthusiast, she often took part in long-distance runs.
Her clear abilities and the evident trust her father placed in her made her a frequent subject of speculation about the royal succession.
An Unresolved Succession
That speculation now gives way to uncertainty. King Vajiralongkorn, 73, has not yet named an heir. Thai custom holds that the heir should be male, though a 1974 constitutional amendment does permit a woman to take the throne.
The king has five sons, but four from his second marriage were disowned in 1996 and have since lived with their mother in the United States. His fifth son, Dipangkorn, born to his third wife, is the presumed heir, although questions have been raised about his ability to carry out the role of monarch in a country where the royal institution wields enormous influence.
For many Thai royalists, Princess Bajrakitiyabha had appeared to be the most promising figure to succeed her father, whether as queen in her own right or as a regent supporting Prince Dipangkorn.
A Question Left Hanging
Her death leaves the future of the Thai throne unresolved, and the country’s strict lese majeste law, which criminalizes criticism of the monarchy, effectively rules out any open public discussion of who might come next.
For now, Thailand mourns a princess widely regarded as its most capable royal, even as the deeper question her passing raises about the monarchy’s future remains one that cannot openly be asked.
