Nineteen Arrested as Race-Hate Violence and Arson Grip Parts of Northern Ireland

The Northern Ireland disorder arrests have climbed to nineteen, including a 16-year-old boy, following days of violence across parts of the region, with police now linking an arson attack on a north Belfast home to the unrest.

A Calmer Night, but Continued Violence

Thursday night was relatively quiet compared with earlier in the week, though police say the disorder has not fully subsided. The fire service was called to the Shore Road on Thursday night, where a blaze had been deliberately set at the rear of a house. No injuries were reported.

Police said the property was unoccupied at the time of the attack, but two neighbouring homes also sustained damage. The incident is being treated as a hate-motivated arson.

The violence has left a trail of related incidents across the region:

  • Race-hate graffiti was reported in the Dee Street and Newtownards Road areas of east Belfast.
  • A car fire was extinguished on the Glenshane Road in Derry at 00:30 BST on Friday, with no injuries, and is also being treated as hate-motivated arson.

The Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service said it received 46 emergency calls on Thursday evening, sending crews to 26 incidents across the region.

A Community Living in Fear

The unrest has deeply unsettled immigrant communities. A leading member of the Indian community in Londonderry said some overseas healthcare professionals have begun questioning whether they should have come to Northern Ireland at all.

Dr Mukesh Chugh, who has lived and worked as a doctor in Derry for more than 20 years, described the toll in stark terms. Speaking to BBC Radio Foyle’s North West Today programme, he said people from different nations and backgrounds had lost their homes and cars, with windows smashed in attacks.

He recounted messages circulating in a community WhatsApp group, including reports that one family with small children had been made homeless overnight. People, he said, are anxious and frightened, and they urgently need reassurance.

Police Response Continues

The Police Service of Northern Ireland said its policing operation would remain in place over the weekend to help maintain public order. Authorities are continuing to investigate the string of arson attacks and hate-motivated incidents as the situation is monitored closely.

What Sparked the Unrest

The disorder erupted after footage of a knife attack in north Belfast on Monday night was shared widely on social media. That incident set off the wave of violence that has since spread to other parts of Northern Ireland, leaving communities shaken and prompting the ongoing police response.

Looking Ahead

With arrests mounting and a heightened police presence set to continue through the weekend, authorities are working to restore calm. Yet for many immigrant families caught in the crossfire, the damage is already done, leaving fear and uncertainty in communities that now look to officials for protection and reassurance.
