The Disclosure Day box office numbers are in, and Steven Spielberg’s latest sci-fi outing is soaring well past expectations. Universal and Amblin’s alien thriller has landed a global opening of $93.9 million—a haul that blows away its original projection of a low $65 million.
A throwback to paranoid 1970s thrillers like The Parallax View, the film is proving that Spielberg’s brand of cerebral science fiction still has serious pull at the worldwide box office.
A Strong Start on Both Sides of the Atlantic
The opening is being driven heavily by overseas demand. International markets are overindexing with $49.9 million, while North America adds another $44 million.
The star-studded ensemble—featuring Emily Blunt, Colman Domingo, Josh O’Connor and Colin Firth—earned a “B” CinemaScore. And across nearly every major market, the film is claiming the top spot, with Germany the lone exception where it sits at No. 2.
How the Key Markets Are Performing
The film’s international rollout has been remarkably consistent, often outpacing comparable sci-fi titles. Here’s a look at the standout territories:
- UK & Ireland: A 3-day total of $3.8 million, with the BFI Imax remaining the top site for a third straight day and main evening shows largely sold out. The weekend is tracking toward $7.3 million—ahead of Tenet, Twisters and Arrival.
- France: $1.5 million over three days with the best per-screen average, more than doubling the admissions of local blockbuster De Gaulle Part 1. The weekend outlook is $3.7 million.
- Mexico: $1.6 million across three days, commanding 31% of the market even amid World Cup screenings, with a $3.5 million weekend in sight.
- Australia: $2.1 million across four days, holding 26% of the weekend box office, tracking just under $3 million.
- Spain: An $800K Friday accounting for nearly half the day’s business, with a weekend forecast of $2.8 million.
- Brazil: $1.5 million over three days from 972 screens, or 32% of total business, heading toward $2.7 million.
- Italy: A 3-day total of $992K, leading the market with a commanding 39% share and the highest per-screen average, eyeing $2.2 million.
- Germany: $1 million over three days, taking a 14.5% Friday share—No. 2 behind Scary Movie.
- Hong Kong: Half a million across three days while controlling 40% of the territory, with an opening tracking toward $1 million.
- Netherlands: $500K over three days, with Friday marking Universal’s highest day to date in the market; weekend outlook of $0.9 million.
- Poland: $400K so far, with a $900K weekend projected.
Premium Formats Lead the Way
One striking feature of the rollout is just how much premium large-format screens are contributing. Across multiple territories, Imax, Dolby Cinema and other PLF screens are punching above their weight.
In the UK, Imax represented 11% of business, with the BFI alone accounting for 20%. There were also telling signs about who’s buying tickets: luxury chain Everyman jumped two points on Friday, suggesting older audiences were heading out and seeking a more premium night at the movies. The Netherlands saw Imax pull a robust 19% of sales, while markets from Brazil to Australia reported steady premium-format contributions.
Outpacing the Competition
Perhaps the most impressive aspect of the opening is how favorably Disclosure Day compares to recent genre heavyweights. Across territory after territory, the film is topping the openings of titles like Arrival, Twisters, Project Hail Mary, Tenet, Ready Player One and One Battle After Another—often by wide margins.
In Brazil, for instance, it came in above all key comparisons, including a 61% edge over Ready Player One. In Hong Kong, it more than tripled One Battle After Another. And in France, it more than doubled Arrival.
For Spielberg and Universal, the message from this opening weekend is clear: audiences worldwide are still ready to be abducted by a smart, star-driven sci-fi thriller—and Disclosure Day has emerged as one of the genre’s strongest global launches in recent memory.
