Highway Reopens After Deadly Investigation
Interstate 5 southbound in Portland has reopened to all traffic following a fatal motorcycle crash that prompted a major investigation and a temporary closure. The I-5 fatal crash Portland investigation concluded its on-scene portion late Friday night, allowing officials to restore the flow of traffic.
Portland Police Bureau (PPB) officers and the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) reopened the lanes of travel as of 10:30 p.m., bringing relief to drivers who had been rerouted for hours.
The Investigation Continues
While the roadway is back open, the traffic investigation itself is far from over. Crash investigators are urging anyone with information to come forward, especially those who witnessed the crash but have not yet spoken with police.
Authorities have asked that any such individuals submit a tip through the department’s online portal, referencing case number 26-178327. Officials noted that additional information would be released when appropriate.
How the Crash Unfolded
The tragedy occurred on Friday, June 19, 2026, at 6:18 p.m. Portland Police officers assigned to the North Precinct responded to a report of a crash on southbound Interstate 5 at exit 299A/Lake Oswego, just south of the Marquam Bridge.
Upon arrival, officers discovered a motorcycle-involved crash. Emergency medical services also responded, and paramedics determined that the rider had died at the scene. According to preliminary information, no other vehicles were involved in the incident.
Road Closure and Detours
In the aftermath, the Portland Police Traffic Division’s Major Crash Team was dispatched to investigate, which required closing southbound I-5 during their work.
To manage the disruption, traffic was redirected as follows:
- Drivers were routed from the Marquam Bridge onto northbound I-405
- When possible, motorists were advised to use I-205 as a bypass to continue into south and southwest Portland
ODOT assisted PPB with traffic control throughout the closure to keep the surrounding roadways moving as safely as possible.
A Troubling Pattern
This fatal crash adds to a sobering tally for the city. It marks the 20th traffic-related fatality in Portland this year — and the second within just a 25-hour span.
It also represents the eighth fatality of the year involving a motorcycle or gas-powered scooter, highlighting an ongoing concern about the safety of riders on Portland’s roads.
Looking Ahead
With the on-scene investigation complete and I-5 reopened, attention now turns to the continuing inquiry into what caused the crash. Investigators remain hopeful that members of the public can help fill in the details.
Anyone with relevant information is encouraged to contact police through the online tip portal using case number 26-178327. Further updates are expected as the investigation moves forward.
