A devastating crash on California’s 210 Freeway left one woman dead and 32 others injured after a semi-truck plowed across the median in Irwindale. The Saturday morning collision, which involved multiple vehicles, was severe enough to be declared a mass casualty incident and remains under active investigation.
How the Crash Unfolded
The incident occurred on the westbound 210 Freeway in Irwindale on the morning of June 20 at 8:55 a.m. local time, according to California Highway Patrol (CHP) traffic logs.
A semi-truck described as a “red semi” broke through the center divider wall, crossing from the eastbound lanes into oncoming westbound traffic. At least three vehicles were caught up in the collision, the logs indicated. The CHP did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
A Mass Casualty Incident
The scale of the crash quickly became apparent. According to the Los Angeles County Fire Department (LACFD), emergency crews arrived to find one person dead at the scene.
The injury toll was significant:
- Ten people were transported to a local hospital
- Two of the injured were in critical condition
- Six of those hurt were minors
- An additional 22 people reported minor injuries but declined medical assistance
Given the number of victims, the fire department later classified the event as a “mass casualty” incident. The LACFD did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The Victim
The person who died at the scene was an adult woman, according to local outlets KTLA 5 and ABC 7. Her identity has not been released at this time as authorities work to notify family and continue their investigation.
A Target Trailer Involved
Photos of the wreck, uploaded to the Citizen app and shared by KTLA 5, showed a large Target truck resting against the highway divider. One image captured a white van crashed into the side of the truck, illustrating the violent nature of the collision.
A Target spokesperson confirmed that the truck was being transported by a third-party carrier and that the driver was not a Target employee. In a statement, the company expressed deep sorrow over the fatal crash, offering condolences to everyone affected and their loved ones. The spokesperson added that Target was cooperating closely with local law enforcement and would defer further questions to authorities.
Ongoing Investigation and Closures
The cause of the crash remains under investigation, according to local outlets. In the aftermath, the accident triggered extensive freeway closures, including a shutdown of the westbound lanes, as crews worked to clear the scene and assist the injured.
As authorities piece together what led to the truck crossing the median, the incident stands as a sobering reminder of how quickly a routine morning commute can turn tragic. Investigators have not yet indicated when the freeway would fully reopen or when additional details about the victim and the cause might be released.
