Arrest Made After Five Wounded Outside Virginia State Dorm as University President Addresses Campus

The Virginia State University shooting that wounded five people outside a campus dormitory has prompted a public response from the school’s president, who confirmed an arrest while acknowledging the anxiety the incident has created among students and their families.

The timing could hardly have been worse. The gunfire erupted just one day after upperclassmen returned to campus for the start of a new academic year.

What Happened Early Saturday

Chesterfield County Police officers were called to the 3300 block of Boisseau Street shortly before 1:30 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 15, responding to reports of a shooting.

Upon arrival, officers discovered five people with gunshot wounds outside a VSU residence hall. One of the victims was in critical condition.

Move-in for returning students had taken place the previous day, Friday, Aug. 14, meaning the campus was populated and active at a moment when many students were still settling back into dorm life.

Who Was Injured

Authorities released details about all five victims, and a notable pattern emerged from that information. Only one of those shot was enrolled at the university.

The victims were identified as follows:

A 21-year-old man, not a student, who suffered critical injuries
A 23-year-old man, not a student, with injuries described as non-life-threatening
A 19-year-old woman, not a student, with non-life-threatening injuries
A 17-year-old boy, not a student, with non-life-threatening injuries
A 20-year-old man, a VSU student, with non-life-threatening injuries

The fact that four of the five wounded had no affiliation with the university raises questions about who was present on campus grounds in the early morning hours and how the confrontation developed.

Suspect Found Hiding on Campus

Investigators identified 19-year-old Camron Harris as a suspect and took him into custody. He was located hiding inside a closet on campus property. Like most of the victims, Harris is not a student at the university.

He was transported to Chesterfield County Jail, where he now faces eight felony warrants. Those charges break down into two categories, each carrying four counts: malicious wounding, and use of a firearm during the commission of a felony.

The paired structure of the charges corresponds to four of the shooting victims, indicating how prosecutors have framed the case at this early stage.

The President’s Message to the Community

VSU President Makola Abdullah addressed the campus and its extended community through a social media post, opening with an acknowledgment that the new academic year is beginning under difficult circumstances.

He expressed relief that an arrest had been made while noting the investigation remains active, with the university working alongside Chesterfield County Police and additional law enforcement partners.

Abdullah offered particular thanks to the Virginia State University Police Department for what he described as an immediate response and continued protection of campus. He extended similar appreciation to Chesterfield County Police and to the local, state and federal agencies that assisted at the scene and remain involved.

Speaking Directly to Parents

A significant portion of Abdullah’s message was aimed at families rather than students. He acknowledged the concern such an incident produces, especially among parents who entrust their children to the university’s care.

He emphasized that the institution treats that responsibility seriously and that the safety and wellbeing of students and the broader campus community rank among its highest priorities.

He also thanked the many parents, alumni, friends, community partners and supporters who reached out with messages of concern and encouragement, saying those calls and expressions of support carried real meaning during a difficult stretch.

Abdullah closed by asking the community to keep the university, its students and everyone affected in their thoughts and prayers, describing VSU as a strong and resilient community whose character shows most clearly during challenging moments.

The Investigation Continues

Despite the arrest, the case is far from closed. Chesterfield officials told local media that they are still searching for additional suspects, an indication that investigators believe more than one person may have been involved.

That detail matters for campus security planning. A single arrest resolves less than it might appear if others connected to the shooting remain unaccounted for.

Police have asked anyone with information to contact the Chesterfield County Police Department at 804-748-1251.

A Difficult Start to the Semester

For a university preparing to welcome its full student body, an incident of this nature creates challenges that extend well beyond the police investigation.

Students returning to campus must weigh their sense of safety against the routine of academic life. Parents dropping off first-year students in the coming days will arrive with the incident fresh in mind. Administrators face the task of demonstrating that security measures are adequate without overstating what any campus police force can control.

The involvement of multiple non-students, both as victims and as the arrested suspect, points toward a broader question about access to campus grounds during late-night hours. Universities have historically balanced openness against control, and incidents like this one tend to reopen that debate.

For now, the university has stated that operations will move forward into the new academic year while the investigation continues under the direction of Chesterfield County authorities.
