The X-Men reboot cast has finally been revealed, and Marvel Studios did it in front of a packed room. At Disney’s D23 fan event in the United States on Friday, the studio named seven actors joining its long-awaited relaunch of the mutant franchise — with Stranger Things star Sadie Sink and Adam Driver among the headline additions.

The film, still untitled, will be directed by Jake Schreier and arrives in cinemas in May 2028.

The full slate announced at the event:

• Samara Weaving as Emma Frost

Sink addressed the crowd directly, saying it was wonderful to be there and to finally discuss the character after months of speculation.

Driver appeared by video link as his casting was announced, stepping into one of the franchise’s most menacing antagonists.

Sink’s Role Was Already Half Out

The Jean Grey announcement was not entirely a surprise. Sink’s casting effectively surfaced last month when she appeared in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, giving audiences an early glimpse before the formal reveal at D23.

That kind of soft introduction has become a familiar Marvel technique — planting a character in an existing film so the eventual standalone announcement lands with recognition rather than cold.

A Franchise Returning Home

The last X-Men film, Dark Phoenix, reached cinemas in June 2019 with a cast including Jennifer Lawrence and Sophie Turner. It was released under 20th Century Fox.

Earlier that same year, Disney — Marvel’s parent company — acquired the rights to the franchise, bringing the mutants under the same roof as the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the first time.

The gap between that final Fox entry and this 2028 release will be close to nine years. That is a long runway by blockbuster standards, and it gives the new film something rare: room to define itself without immediate comparison.

The Professor X Handover

Christopher Abbott inherits a role with considerable history.

Sir Patrick Stewart originated the character on screen and has returned to it multiple times, including an appearance in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Stewart is also set to appear as Professor X in Avengers: Doomsday, arriving later this year — meaning audiences will see him in the role before Abbott takes it on in the X-Men film. Marvel has not explained how the two versions relate, though the studio’s multiverse framework provides an obvious mechanism if it chooses to use one.

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige told the D23 audience that additional X-Men casting news is still ahead.

That is worth noting given who is absent from Friday’s list. Several of the roster’s most recognisable figures — Wolverine and Magneto chief among them — were not addressed, suggesting the studio is holding back its biggest announcements.

What the Casting Signals

The choices lean noticeably toward younger performers with television followings rather than established franchise leads.

Sink and Connor both arrive from series with intensely engaged audiences. Navarrette and Boyd are relatively early in their film careers. That pattern suggests a version of the X-Men built around younger characters growing into their abilities, which would align with the source material’s origins as a story about adolescence and difference.

The counterweights are Abbott, Weaving and Driver — actors with substantial dramatic range who bring gravity to the mentor and antagonist roles.

Why Mr Sinister Matters

Casting Driver as Nathaniel Milbury is a specific choice worth understanding.

Mr Sinister is a geneticist obsessed with mutant DNA and manipulation of bloodlines, particularly those connected to Jean Grey and Cyclops. He is a manipulator rather than a brute, which suits an actor known for controlled menace.

His presence alongside both Sink and Connor’s characters signals that the film intends to engage with the Grey and Summers storylines that have long anchored X-Men mythology.

The Wait Ahead

May 2028 is a considerable distance off, and the intervening years will bring further announcements, production updates and inevitable speculation.

For now, Marvel has established its foundation: a director, a release date, seven confirmed roles and a clear indication that the cast list is not yet complete.
