The Mineral Fire Placer County incident has created a complicated situation for first responders, as a wildfire burns near an active law enforcement search for an armed suspect who allegedly shot at deputies earlier Sunday.

Fire Breaks Out Near Active Search Area

The fire ignited close to the Mineral Bar Campground, situated off Iowa Hill Road along the North Fork of the American River. Footage captured by an AlertCalifornia camera showed the blaze producing a distinct plume of white smoke rising from the area.

Due to the fire’s proximity to ongoing police activity, fire crews have made the decision to hold off on active suppression efforts for now, according to the Foresthill Fire Protection District. Officials explained that getting firefighting resources into the immediate area poses safety concerns given the unfolding law enforcement operation nearby.

A shelter-in-place order is currently in effect for residents in the surrounding area as both the fire and the search for the suspect continue to develop.

Weather Conditions Remain Favorable

Meteorologist Ophelia Young reported that wind conditions in the area remain relatively calm, with gusts reaching no more than 6 mph. Those manageable wind speeds are helping limit the fire’s spread despite firefighters being unable to actively engage the blaze directly at this time.

By 6 p.m., Placer County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Elise Soviar provided an update indicating the fire had noticeably diminished, describing it as less of a concern compared to earlier in the day. However, she noted it remains unclear whether the fire is directly connected to the ongoing search for the armed suspect or whether it started independently.

What Led To The Manhunt

The law enforcement search centers on 44-year-old Derek Spencer, who is wanted in connection with allegedly pointing a firearm at a couple in the Iowa Hill area on Sunday, along with additional felony charges. According to the sheriff’s office, when deputies located Spencer around 10:30 a.m., he responded by ramming one of their patrol vehicles, rendering it inoperable, before fleeing the scene.

Officials say Spencer subsequently fired shots at law enforcement personnel and also targeted a sheriff’s office helicopter during the pursuit. Fortunately, no deputies sustained injuries during these encounters, though Soviar indicated that investigators are still working to determine whether anyone else may have been harmed during the incident.

Law enforcement has mobilized significant resources in the effort to locate Spencer, including SWAT teams, K9 units, and aerial support.
