Few royal stories generate as much intrigue as those involving Prince Harry and Meghan. Every time the Duke of Sussex sets foot back on British soil, the coverage reads less like news and more like the latest episode of a long-running drama, complete with feuding brothers, a father hoping for peace, and a public that can’t quite decide how it feels.
This week brings a fresh chapter, as Harry returns to the UK, with the tantalizing possibility that his wife and their two young children, Archie and Lilibet, may join him at some point during the trip.
A Visit Shaped by Uncertainty
The purpose of the journey is fairly straightforward. Harry is here to prepare for the upcoming Invictus Games and to take part in a series of charity engagements. Five days of events kick off in London on Tuesday before shifting to Birmingham, the city set to host next year’s games for wounded military veterans.
But nothing involving the Sussexes ever stays simple. An early plan for the visit had included the Duchess of Sussex, yet security concerns mean she and the children will now skip the London leg. They may still appear elsewhere in the country later in the week, leaving the whole thing hanging on a familiar question: will they or won’t they?
This last-minute reshuffling is unlikely to help any hopes of mending fences. It’s easy to picture Palace staff sighing at yet another change of plan. Still, those close to Harry point out that he has always been fiercely protective when it comes to his family’s safety, and that instinct tends to override everything else.
A Rare Family Reunion, If It Happens
Should the security issues be resolved and Meghan and the children make it over, the moment would carry real weight. It would mark the first time the entire Sussex family has been together in the UK since Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022, an occasion that now feels like it belonged to a completely different era.
Inside the Sussex camp, the mood is said to be resolute despite all the back-and-forth. Harry is reportedly eager to reconnect with friends and relatives, and nothing is expected to dampen his commitment to supporting what he considers his Invictus “second family.”
Adding another layer to the visit is the anticipated ruling in Harry’s legal battle against Associated Newspapers over claims of unlawful information gathering. The outcome could color the tone of the trip, though Meghan will no longer be in the UK when the decision lands.
The Photo Everyone Is Talking About
During Harry’s previous solo visit in September 2025, attention centered on a private meeting with his father at Clarence House. This time, speculation has shifted toward something bigger: whether King Charles might finally spend time with Meghan and his grandchildren, and whether a family photograph could capture it.
For the Sussexes, such an image would symbolize their rightful place within the family. For Palace officials, the concern runs the other way, particularly around how a photo might later be used commercially back in California.
Former Sun editor David Yelland believes the odds of that picture happening are slim. As he puts it, the image the public most wants is one featuring the grandchildren, but the logistics alone make it nearly impossible. He raises the practical headaches:
- Who stands where in the frame?
- Is Meghan included?
- Where does the King position himself?
- Will Camilla be part of it?
In his colorful assessment, arranging a photo of these particular family members in the same room would be harder than getting rival world leaders to pose together after a summit.
Diana’s Grave and a Return to Roots
Even without a photograph, a meeting feels probable if the children do arrive, especially given King Charles’s own health challenges and his desire to see his grandchildren.
Harry is also expected to reconnect with his late mother’s side of the family, with talk of a possible stay at the Spencer estate at Althorp. That would open the door to an emotional visit to Princess Diana’s island resting place, allowing Harry to introduce his children to the grandmother they never had the chance to meet.
A Duchess Who Still Divides Opinion
Much of the spotlight will inevitably fall on Meghan, who hasn’t been seen in the UK since the late Queen’s funeral. How the public would react to her remains an open question, and even if she does appear, it will likely be within the safety of a carefully staged event.
The numbers paint a difficult picture. A recent YouGov survey found that just 20% of the public hold a favorable view of her, the lowest figure recorded since tracking began in 2017.
PR expert Farzana Baduel notes the steep decline, pointing out that Meghan has spoken about being among the most trolled people in the world and must constantly navigate an intense wave of hostility.
Yet Meghan has also championed causes likely to resonate widely, including efforts to reduce online harm affecting young people. Royal commentator Pauline Maclaran argues that the UK public remains unsympathetic and, perhaps unfairly, continues to blame Meghan for the couple’s exit from royal duties. In her view, Meghan faced an especially tough position from the start, entering the institution as a biracial American and an independent woman.
A Brotherly Rift That Won’t Heal
If reconciliation with the King seems plausible, the situation between Harry and Prince William looks far bleaker. The brothers are on entirely separate paths, with William steadily moving toward his future as monarch.
Royal commentator Richard Palmer suggests the King genuinely wants a bond with his grandchildren, making some form of reconciliation possible. But when it comes to the two brothers, he sees little hope. According to Palmer, there is currently no relationship between them, and William has grown less inclined to repair it over time, reportedly telling friends that he simply doesn’t think about Harry anymore.
Escaping Royalty, Then Returning to It
Buckingham Palace has stayed silent on the trip, approaching these visits with cautious politeness, welcoming without warmth and rarely sorry to see them end.
There’s a certain irony worth noting too. The couple once walked away from royal life and relocated across the Atlantic, yet their return increasingly mirrors the very royal engagements they seemed so eager to leave behind. Having stopped being working royals, Prince Harry and Meghan now appear, in their own way, to be working hard at being royals once more.
