Karen Meredith, a Gold Star mother whose son is buried at Arlington, voiced specific concerns about the proposed observation deck and how close it would sit to the cemetery grounds, worried about the impact on a space meant to honor fallen service members.

Beyond public opposition, the project now faces formal legal action. Three Vietnam War veterans, joined by a historic preservationist, have filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration, arguing that the arch’s construction would negatively affect significant historic sightlines and disrupt the visual and symbolic relationship between Arlington National Cemetery and nearby monuments.

Adding another layer of complexity, a federal judge ruled earlier this month that the administration must provide 48 hours’ advance notice before beginning any demolition work or construction activity at the proposed site. In an unrelated but tragic incident, a 74-year-old Maryland man now faces serious criminal charges after fatally shooting a woman during a hunting trip in Ellendale, Delaware, apparently after mistaking her for a deer.

How The Shooting Unfolded

Walter Moorhead, who resides in Salisbury, Maryland, was arrested in Delaware on Friday, September 18th, following the deadly shooting. State troopers responded to an open field near South Old State Road, just north of East Robbins Road, at approximately 7:40 p.m. Friday evening after receiving reports that a woman had been shot.

The victim, a 39-year-old woman from Georgetown, Delaware, was rushed to the hospital following the shooting but was later pronounced dead from her injuries. Police have withheld her identity publicly while they work to notify her family.

When troopers arrived at the scene, they located Moorhead and determined that he had fired the shot that struck and killed the victim. He was subsequently taken into custody, with the Delaware State Police Homicide Unit assuming responsibility for the ongoing investigation.

What Investigators Have Determined So Far

According to preliminary findings, the victim had been walking through the field alongside a man and two children at the time of the shooting. Meanwhile, Moorhead was positioned in a ground blind actively hunting deer nearby. Investigators believe Moorhead mistakenly identified what he thought was a deer and fired his rifle, unknowingly striking the woman instead.

Police haven’t confirmed whether the man accompanying the victim or the two children present at the scene sustained any injuries during the incident.

Charges Filed Against Moorhead

Moorhead now faces several serious criminal charges stemming from the shooting, including manslaughter for recklessly causing another person’s death, possession of a firearm during commission of a felony, and three separate counts of first-degree reckless endangering, charges likely tied to the presence of the man and two children who were also in the field at the time.
