Two Killed, Child Wounded in Shooting at California Library

A California library shooting left two people dead and a child injured after a gunman opened fire inside the Butte County Library in Chico on Monday evening. The sudden burst of violence inside a community space turned an ordinary evening into a scene of chaos and tragedy.

Authorities responded swiftly, taking the suspect into custody within minutes, but not before two adults lost their lives.

How the Attack Unfolded

The Chico Police Department began receiving multiple 911 calls at 5:12 p.m., with frightened callers reporting the sound of gunshots and screaming coming from the library on Sherman Avenue.

Officers moved quickly, arriving at the scene just six minutes later at 5:18 p.m. and immediately entering the building to confront the threat.

As police pushed through the front doors, the suspect attempted to flee from the back of the building. However, officers had already set up a perimeter around the library, and the gunman was taken into custody without further incident.

The Victims

The aftermath was devastating. Police confirmed that two adults had been killed in the attack.

A child who was also caught in the violence was rushed to Enloe Hospital. Fortunately, the child suffered only non-life-threatening injuries and is expected to recover.

As of Monday night, key details remained under wraps as the investigation continued. According to the Chico Police Department:

  • The name of the suspected shooter had not yet been released
  • The identities of the victims would be shared the following morning
  • The investigation into the shooting remained ongoing

An Unclear Motive

One of the most unsettling aspects of the case is that authorities have not been able to determine why the shooting happened.

“There is no known motive at this time,” the Chico Police Department said. Investigators added that, based on the information available so far, they believe the shooter acted alone rather than as part of a coordinated attack.

Federal Help and Public Warnings

The Federal Bureau of Investigation has stepped in to assist the Chico Police Department with the investigation, bringing additional resources to the case.

The FBI’s Sacramento office issued a public safety message on social media Monday night, urging residents to listen to on-scene law enforcement and to stay away from the area while the situation was being handled.

How to Help

With the investigation still active, police are calling on the community for assistance. Anyone with information about the shooting is urged to contact the Chico Police Department at (530) 897-4911.

The Bigger Picture

A library is meant to be a place of quiet, learning, and community, which makes this act of violence all the more jarring. As investigators work to piece together what happened and why, the Chico community is left grappling with the shock of a deadly attack in a space that should have felt safe.

Further details are expected to emerge as authorities release the names of those involved and continue their investigation in the days ahead.
