Fourth Death Since May: Federal Task Force in Memphis Under Scrutiny After Latest Fatal Shooting

A Memphis federal task force fatal shooting has once again put the controversial law enforcement operation in the spotlight, marking the second deadly encounter involving a task force member in just four days. A man was shot and killed on Wednesday, adding to a mounting death toll that has drawn concern from grieving families and civil rights advocates alike.

What Happened Wednesday

The shooting unfolded around 8:30 a.m. local time as agents from the US Drug Enforcement Administration served a drug warrant tied to Shelby County, according to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.

The details of the encounter come with some conflicting emphasis depending on the source. According to US Marshals Service spokesman Brady McCarron, the man was inside a hotel room and refused to open the door for agents, prompting them to break it down. An early news release from the Marshals Service stated the man was killed after pointing a handgun at task force members.

A later account from the state bureau, which is now investigating, was far more cautious in its wording. It said only that the situation escalated for reasons still being examined, leading a DEA agent to fire into the room and fatally strike the man.

Authorities have not released the man’s identity. What is clear is that no officers were hurt, and the DEA team involved included at least one local Memphis Police Department officer.

A Pattern of Deadly Encounters

This latest death is not an isolated incident. By the state bureau’s count, the man is at least the fourth person since May to die after being shot by a member of the task force.

The recent timeline is sobering:

  • Sunday: Two National Guardsmen fatally shot 20-year-old Tyrin Johnson, saying he turned toward them with a gun during a downtown pursuit.
  • May 13: A task force member shot and killed 41-year-old Darrin Pigram while serving an arrest warrant. Officials said Pigram had reached for a gun tucked in his waistband before a DEA agent opened fire.
  • May 21: A Homeland Security Investigations agent fatally shot 25-year-old Jonah Neal, who was armed and reportedly threatening to harm himself. Officials said it remained unclear whether Neal died from the gunshot or from self-inflicted stab wounds.

A Family Demands Answers

For the loved ones of those killed, the official accounts have offered little comfort.

Johnson’s family said the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation told them he had been shot twice in the chest. His grandfather, Evaniel Johnson, described a young man with a future ahead of him, someone who had taken classes at Tennessee State University, was raising a young child, and was preparing to help lead the family business.

He directed a pointed plea at authorities, demanding they release any video of the shooting. Until he sees that footage, he said, he intends to keep fighting on his grandson’s behalf for as long as he has breath.

How the Task Force Came to Be

The Memphis Safe Task Force sits at the center of a broader and highly contested national strategy. It was established last year by President Trump as part of an effort to deploy National Guard troops and federal agents into cities run by Democrats, which he characterized as overrun by crime.

While courts blocked plans to send troops into several other cities, Tennessee National Guard members have been operating in Memphis as part of the task force since last fall.

What Comes Next

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has been tasked with examining each of the shootings. Once its inquiries are complete, the findings will be handed over to the local district attorney general for review.

For now, questions surrounding the task force’s use of force continue to grow, even as officials urge patience while the investigations run their course.
