The decision behind Trump older Air Force One Turkey departure is now coming into focus, with a new report indicating that the US Secret Service recommended the move as a security precaution. Rather than leave the NATO summit aboard the newly renovated Qatari-donated jet that had carried him there, President Donald Trump unexpectedly boarded an older Air Force One for the flight out of Turkey.
He later switched to the new plane in Britain to complete the journey to Washington.
A Trip Overshadowed by Tension With Iran
The context made the switch especially notable. The visit to Turkey for the NATO summit marked the new plane’s first international outing, and it unfolded just as hostilities with Iran, a country that shares a border with Turkey, were escalating.
According to reporting from The New York Times, citing unnamed sources briefed on the matter, the plane change was a precaution and was not driven by any concrete threat.
The President’s Own Explanation
Trump offered a more casual framing of the decision. On Truth Social, he said he would fly the older baby blue Air Force One from Ankara to RAF Mildenhall in Britain “for old time’s sake,” while the new plane stopped at the same base so US service members stationed there could tour it.
When asked directly in Ankara whether an assassination threat had prompted the switch, Trump did not give a clear answer but acknowledged the danger. He told reporters at the summit’s closing news conference that he was number one on Iran’s kill list, adding that he couldn’t say for certain but didn’t really care.
Questions Over the New Jet’s Security
The new aircraft has been the subject of scrutiny for months. It is a Boeing 747 gifted to the United States by Qatar last year and refitted by defense contractor L3Harris Technologies. Trump personally selected its distinctive red, white, dark blue, and gold color scheme.
The plane is meant to serve as a temporary stand-in while Boeing works through long delays in delivering the next generation of Air Force One aircraft. That arrangement has drawn persistent criticism on several fronts:
- The overall cost of the gift and its retrofit
- The speed of the upgrade work
- Whether the rapidly completed jet is as secure as the existing Air Force One fleet
Some experts have voiced concern that the fast-tracked upgrades may have left the aircraft less secure than the established presidential planes.
Distraction as a Deliberate Tool
The White House framed the episode as part of a broader security posture. White House Communications Director Steven Cheung was cited as saying that, as the president has noted, many of America’s enemies have set their sights on him, and the administration uses every available tool, including distraction and misdirection, to counter those threats.
For now, the reporting suggests the switch was a matter of caution rather than a response to any specific, verified danger, even as questions about the new jet’s readiness continue to linger.
