Chaos in Pikesville: Bus Slams Into 12 Cars and Building, Injuring 33 in Mass Casualty Incident

A Pikesville bus crash mass casualty incident left as many as 33 people injured on Wednesday evening after a bus collided with a dozen vehicles and a building, trapping two people in the wreckage, according to Baltimore County fire officials. The scale of the crash prompted an enormous emergency response and shut down a major roadway in both directions.

How the Crash Unfolded

Emergency crews were dispatched around 5:48 p.m. Wednesday for a collision involving a Maryland Transit Administration bus and multiple cars in the 1500 block of Reisterstown Road.

Given the severity, authorities declared a mass casualty incident, triggering a large-scale mobilization of resources. The response included:

  • 15 ambulances
  • Medevac helicopters and the Shock Trauma GoTeam
  • Medical ambulance buses brought in from Howard and Anne Arundel counties

Fire officials said one person was trapped inside the bus and another in a car. A Medevac helicopter airlifted a patient with critical injuries to a hospital, and by 7:18 p.m., all patients had been transported for treatment.

Damage and Road Closures

The aftermath left a scene of significant destruction. One of the cars flipped onto its roof on the sidewalk, while several others sustained serious damage. Officials said they were assessing the structural integrity of the buildings caught up in the crash.

According to the Maryland State Highway Administration, Reisterstown Road was closed in both directions between Old Court Road and Sudbrook Lane as crews worked the scene.

Baltimore Gas and Electric crews also responded to deal with downed wires. In a statement, BGE noted that one utility pole had been knocked down but confirmed there was no impact to customer service.

Officials Respond

Local and state leaders quickly offered their support and thanks to first responders.

Baltimore County Executive Kathy Klausmeier said her thoughts were with everyone affected by the multi-vehicle crash, thanking fire, EMS, and police crews for their swift response and care for the injured, and pledging to keep the victims and their families in her prayers.

Governor Wes Moore said his administration was closely monitoring the situation. He expressed gratitude for the first responders who acted with speed and skill to protect the community, adding that he and his wife were keeping those affected in their hearts. He also noted that the state had been in close coordination with local officials to provide any support needed on the ground.

As of now, authorities have not released details on what caused the crash, and the investigation remains ongoing.
