A Secret Service misconduct investigation has swept up three officials, including the agency’s communications director, in a matter the organization has declined to explain publicly.

Anthony Guglielmi, who has served as the agency’s chief spokesman since March 2022, has been placed on leave, according to two sources who spoke with NBC News on Wednesday.

A Secret Service spokesperson acknowledged that three officials were placed on leave pending an investigation into potential misconduct. All three are non-law-enforcement personnel.

The Response From Guglielmi’s Side

Gregg Bernstein, a spokesperson representing Guglielmi, stopped short of confirming his status.

Bernstein described him as a professional of deep integrity whose public record spanning decades of advocacy for local, state, and federal agencies speaks for itself.

He added that Guglielmi holds profound respect for the Secret Service and its work, and is cooperating fully with everything being asked of him.

That last point is notable. Cooperation is an active posture, and it suggests a process already underway rather than a preliminary look.

Who Guglielmi Is

Guglielmi has occupied one of the more visible non-agent roles in federal law enforcement communications.

He took the communications director position in March 2022 and became the public voice of the agency during a period that included intense scrutiny of its operations.

Later that year he testified before the House committee investigating January 6, appearing in connection with testimony given by former White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson.
