U.S. Pulls B-1 Bombers From RAF Fairford Over Fears of an Iranian Drone Attack

The B-1 bombers at RAF Fairford were quietly moved out over the weekend after intelligence pointed to a possible Iranian drone attack, according to U.S. officials. The dozen aircraft had only been deployed to the British base for a few weeks, and their sudden departure has added a fresh layer of tension to an already volatile standoff.

Why the Move Matters

An attack launched from British soil would have put American service members at risk and could have destroyed valuable strategic bombers. It would also have been a bold and unprecedented strike by Iran against a U.S. base in Europe, with the potential to push the wider Middle East war into dangerous new territory.

Asked on Monday whether Iran planned such an attack, President Donald Trump said he could not confirm it, but warned that if Tehran tried, it would “suffer greatly.”

What the Pentagon Said

On Sunday, the Pentagon announced that all U.S. bombers deployed to RAF Fairford had returned to their home stations in the United States. It added that the bomber force, including B-1s, B-2s and B-52s, remains ready to deliver precision strikes worldwide, including missions launched and recovered from American soil.

A Link to the Arrests?

The decision came several days after British security forces arrested multiple dual British-Iranian citizens suspected of planning an attack on the base. U.S. officials say it is still unclear whether those detained are connected to the alleged drone plan or to a separate plot.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel had passed intelligence to the UK pointing to the threat. On Monday, Secretary of State Marco Rubio phoned Netanyahu while travelling to Iceland, the State Department said.

Mixed Messages From Washington

The explanation for the move shifted within hours. Rubio first told reporters it was part of regular rotations of Air Force assets around the world and was not directly tied to an Iranian threat.

Later the same day, Trump contradicted that account. He said the bombers did not leave by accident, that there was a threat, and that the aircraft were moved around a little. He added that the United States knows who was behind it and how they are linked to Iran.

Trump was also asked about the attempted attack on the FlyDubai flight and said he believes Iran was responsible. No evidence for that claim has been presented in the information available here.

What Remains Unclear

  • Whether the arrested individuals are connected to the drone threat
  • What exact intelligence prompted the evacuation
  • How the UK and U.S. will adjust security at shared bases
  • Whether Washington plans any response against Iran

What to Watch Next

  • Further charges or arrests in the Fairford investigation
  • Any official U.S. or UK evidence tying Iran to the plot
  • How Iran responds to Trump’s warnings
  • Whether bombers return to Britain or operate only from the United States

The Bottom Line

The sudden withdrawal shows how seriously Washington took the threat, even as officials gave conflicting explanations. With arrests under way, intelligence still being weighed and Trump promising severe consequences, the Fairford affair could become a flashpoint in the wider conflict with Iran.
