ABC Greenlights New ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Spinoff Set in Rural Texas
The Grey’s Anatomy spinoff lineup is about to grow once again. ABC has officially greenlit a brand-new series set in the long-running medical drama universe, with a premiere planned for the 2026-2027 broadcast season.
A New Setting in West Texas
The currently untitled one-hour drama moves the action far from the familiar halls of Grey Sloan Memorial. According to the official logline, the series is an edgy drama centered on a team at a rural medical center in West Texas, described as the last chance for care before miles of nowhere.
That setting promises a noticeably different tone from the original. Rather than a major urban hospital, the spinoff will explore the high-stakes world of rural medicine, where resources are limited and the nearest alternative help may be hours away.
The Team Behind the Series
The spinoff brings together a mix of familiar names from the Grey’s Anatomy world.
Series creator Shonda Rhimes serves as co-creator and executive producer. She is joined by Meg Marinis, who has served as the showrunner of Grey’s Anatomy since Season 20 in 2024 and shares co-creator duties on the new project.
The executive producer roster also includes Ellen Pompeo, the star and executive producer of Grey’s Anatomy, along with longtime Rhimes collaborator Betsy Beers. The series is produced by 20th Television and Shondaland.
For Marinis, the project carries a personal connection. She said she is incredibly excited to expand the Grey’s Anatomy universe, noting that the new series will introduce fresh characters and stories while preserving the heart, emotion, and sense of connection audiences have loved for more than two decades. She also highlighted that the show is set in her home state of Texas, and expressed gratitude to Rhimes for creating the world she now gets to build upon.
Will Familiar Faces Appear?
One major question remains unanswered: how closely the new series will tie into Grey’s Anatomy itself.
Beyond the creative team, it is not yet known what direct connection the spinoff will have to the original show. In particular, there is no word on whether Pompeo’s Meredith Grey or any other established characters will appear at the West Texas medical center. For now, fans will have to wait to learn how linked the two worlds will be.
The Latest in a Long Line of Spinoffs
This project marks the fourth spinoff to emerge from Grey’s Anatomy, underscoring just how durable the franchise has become.
The original drama recently wrapped its 22nd season. Over the years, it has launched several companion series, including:
- Private Practice, which ran for six seasons from 2007 to 2013
- Station 19, which aired for seven seasons from 2018 to 2024
- Grey’s Anatomy: B-Team, a short run of six episodes released on ABC.com in 2018
The Bottom Line
With a new Grey’s Anatomy spinoff heading to West Texas, ABC is once again betting on the enduring appeal of Shonda Rhimes’ medical universe. The rural setting offers a fresh backdrop for the kind of emotional, character-driven storytelling the franchise is known for. While questions about crossovers and casting remain, the combination of Rhimes, Marinis, and Pompeo behind the scenes suggests the new series will arrive with strong creative pedigree when it premieres in the 2026-2027 season.
