Mamdani Endorsement Boosts Progressive Challenger Against Rep. Espaillat
A high-profile Mamdani endorsement has injected fresh energy into one of New York City’s congressional primaries, with the mayor throwing his support behind the democratic socialist challenger taking on Representative Adriano Espaillat. The move places Mayor Zohran Mamdani firmly behind newcomer Darializa Avila Chevalier in her bid to unseat the chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus.
Mamdani announced his decision Thursday evening during an appearance on “The Briefing with Jen Psaki,” framing it as part of a larger struggle to reshape the Democratic Party around working-class priorities.
A Call for New Leadership
In making his case, Mamdani argued that working people have been neglected by politics for far longer than recent years suggest. He contended that ordinary New Yorkers were left behind not just a few years ago, but well before that, and that reversing the trend would require a new generation of leadership.
He described Avila Chevalier as the kind of champion who could restore the party’s focus on the everyday struggles of working people. By electing her to represent Uptown Manhattan and the Bronx, Mamdani suggested, voters could send exactly that kind of fresh voice to Congress.
Who Is Adriano Espaillat?
The incumbent in this race carries a significant political legacy. Espaillat holds the distinction of being the first formerly undocumented member of Congress, and he has represented the 13th District since 2017. His long career in New York politics has earned him a deep and loyal network of allies, sometimes nicknamed the “Squadriano.”
His relationship with Mamdani adds a layer of complexity. Espaillat endorsed Mamdani in last year’s general election for mayor, even though he had backed former Governor Andrew Cuomo in the primary. That history makes Mamdani’s decision to support a challenger to Espaillat especially notable.
An Unexpected Intervention
With less than four weeks remaining before the June 23 primary, it had been uncertain whether Mamdani would weigh in on this particular contest at all. Avila Chevalier already enjoyed considerable progressive backing, including support from the New York City chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America and Justice Democrats. Even so, her race had not been widely viewed as one of the city’s most competitive primaries.
Mamdani’s endorsement changes that calculation. His involvement is expected to draw significantly more attention to her campaign during the crucial final stretch. Reports had earlier indicated the mayor was considering the move before he confirmed it.
Espaillat Responds
Espaillat did not appear rattled by the news. In a statement, he acknowledged that Mamdani was entitled to support whomever he chose but emphasized that a single endorsement does not decide an election. As he put it, voters make that determination.
The congressman pointed to his own formidable support network, which includes:
- Labor unions and advocacy groups
- Governor Kathy Hochul
- Attorney General Letitia James
- House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries
Espaillat pledged to keep doing what he has always done, listening to constituents, showing up across the district, and earning support by meeting voters where they are and fighting for the issues most important to them.
Heavy Spending Signals a Real Contest
Despite earlier perceptions that the race was not especially close, financial activity suggests otherwise. Outside groups have been spending heavily to defend the incumbent.
Notable backers and expenditures include:
- The Latino Victory Fund and BOLD America, both of which have committed six-figure sums in independent expenditures to support Espaillat.
- The political arms of the Congressional Black Caucus, which notably excluded Espaillat from its membership nearly a decade ago, yet is now backing him.
- The Congressional Progressive Caucus, which has also lined up behind the incumbent.
This level of investment hints that political observers see the race as potentially more competitive than its initial reputation suggested.
The Challenger’s Platform
Avila Chevalier comes to the race as an organizer who highlights her activism, including her involvement in the pro-Palestinian encampment at Columbia University. She is aiming to tap into the same progressive momentum that propelled Mamdani to victory last year.
Her platform leans into bold progressive positions, including:
- Abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement
- Criticizing American involvement in what she describes as senseless wars abroad
Appearing alongside Mamdani on Thursday, she framed her candidacy as a fight to represent working-class New Yorkers who have been failed by a political system she says serves corporations, corporate landlords, and special interests. She argued that these forces have made life in New York deeply unaffordable, even as taxpayer dollars fund actions she finds deeply troubling.
Mamdani’s Broader Endorsement Strategy
This is not Mamdani’s first foray into congressional primaries. He has previously made two other endorsements:
- Former city Comptroller Brad Lander, who is challenging Representative Dan Goldman
- State Assemblymember Claire Valdez, a fellow DSA member, in the open race to succeed retiring Representative Nydia Velázquez
Notably, Mamdani also drew a clear line on Thursday night. He declined to endorse anyone in the crowded Democratic primary for NY-12, the seat currently held by retiring Representative Jerry Nadler. The decision is especially interesting given that Mamdani himself lives in that district as the newest resident of Gracie Mansion. He told Psaki that Avila Chevalier would be his final congressional endorsement of the cycle.
What It Means for the Race
The Mamdani endorsement arrives at a pivotal moment, transforming a contest that many had overlooked into one worth watching closely. While Espaillat retains powerful institutional support and a deep political network, the mayor’s backing gives Avila Chevalier a visibility boost she might not otherwise have secured.
As the June 23 primary approaches, the race has become a small but telling test of competing visions within the Democratic Party. On one side stands an experienced incumbent with establishment ties; on the other, a progressive challenger riding a wave of activist energy. Whether Mamdani’s endorsement proves decisive or merely symbolic will ultimately rest, as Espaillat himself noted, in the hands of the voters.
