Fast-Moving ‘November Fire’ Threatens Camp Pendleton Before Crews Halt Its Advance

The November Fire Camp Pendleton blaze sent a wave of alarm through Southern California on Wednesday, as fast-moving flames prompted evacuation warnings in neighborhoods bordering the Marine Corps base outside San Diego. By late afternoon, however, firefighters managed to stop the fire’s forward progress, bringing a tense day to a calmer close.

Flames Spread Quickly Near the Base

The brush fire moved rapidly across the dry landscape, drawing an urgent response from fire crews. Cal Fire reported that the blaze had already scorched more than 500 acres of brush near the November Training Area, close to Wire Mountain Housing on the Southern California military base.

Officials warned that the fire remained active and posed threats to critical infrastructure, which triggered evacuations in nearby communities in Oceanside.

Base Officials Sound the Alarm

Camp Pendleton confirmed the situation in a message posted to its official Facebook page, describing an active wildfire in the November Training Area near Wire Mountain Housing. The base noted that its fire department was responding and that smoke might be visible to base residents and surrounding communities. At that point, no evacuations had been ordered on the base itself, and officials urged people to stay away from the area.

Evacuations Ripple Outward

As the fire pressed on, the impact spread beyond the base. The Oceanside Municipal Golf Course was evacuated and closed, and additional evacuation warnings were issued for several zones, identified as SDC-0427, SDC-0429, SDC-0372, and SDC-0317.

Cal Fire emphasized the seriousness of the threat, urging anyone who might need extra time to leave, along with those caring for pets and livestock, to evacuate immediately because of the potential danger to life and property.

A Coordinated Air and Ground Attack

Firefighters mounted an aggressive response on multiple fronts. The department said crews battled the blaze from both the ground and the air, deploying airtankers to help bring the flames under control. Officials pledged to monitor the situation closely and to provide official updates as they became available.

Local Leaders Keep Watch

The fire drew attention from elected officials as well. Rep. Mike Levin said his office was closely tracking the November Fire as evacuation warnings extended into neighboring Oceanside. He noted that his team was in contact with local officials and would continue sharing updates as the situation developed.

For residents in the affected parts of Oceanside, officials urged readiness to leave at a moment’s notice. Anyone forced to evacuate was directed to El Camino High School, which served as the designated evacuation center.

Progress Halted by Afternoon

The day’s tension eased considerably as conditions improved. By late Wednesday afternoon, fire officials announced that the fire’s forward progress had stopped and that the evacuation warnings had been lifted.

The cause of the November Fire remains under investigation.

Looking Ahead

While the immediate danger has passed, the rapid spread of the November Fire serves as a reminder of how quickly brush fires can escalate in Southern California’s dry conditions. The swift coordination between Cal Fire, the Camp Pendleton Fire Department, and local officials helped prevent a more serious outcome, sparing both the military base and surrounding neighborhoods from greater harm.

Residents are encouraged to stay alert and heed official guidance as investigators work to determine what sparked the blaze.
