An LAPD DUI pursuit wound through several Los Angeles County communities on Wednesday night before officers ultimately called it off over safety concerns. The chase tracked a driver suspected of operating a vehicle under the influence across multiple freeways and surface streets before the suspect slipped away.
A Chase Across Multiple Freeways
Police pursued the suspected DUI driver through Los Angeles County late Wednesday, with aerial footage capturing the unfolding scene. Video from NewsChopper4 showed at least five Los Angeles Police Department vehicles trailing a dark-colored SUV as the pursuit traveled along the 91, 105, and 110 freeways, in addition to local surface streets.
The route carried the chase through a string of communities, moving through areas including Compton, Long Beach, Lynwood, and South LA.
Pursuit Called Off Over Safety
Despite the heavy police presence, the LAPD eventually canceled the pursuit, citing safety concerns. NewsChopper4 last spotted the vehicle near San Pedro and 51st streets around 9:15 p.m.
Decisions to terminate pursuits are not uncommon when the risks to the public, officers, or others on the road begin to outweigh the benefits of continuing, though authorities have not released further details about what prompted the call in this case.
Still Developing
As of now, key questions remain unanswered, including the identity of the driver and whether any arrests may follow. This is a developing story, and additional information is expected to emerge as authorities provide further updates.
