Massive Blaze Levels 1 Million-Square-Foot Medline Medical Supply Warehouse in Tracy

The Medline Tracy warehouse fire erupted into one of the largest warehouse blazes in U.S. history Thursday, destroying a 1 million-square-foot medical supply distribution center and sending towering plumes of black smoke and debris into the sky over Tracy, California.

A Facility in Ruins

Tracy police said the fire tore through the Medline Industries facility in the 5700 block of Promontory Parkway. The building, along with surrounding warehouses that include a FedEx facility and an Amazon warehouse, was evacuated. Despite the scale of the destruction, police reported no injuries.

How the Fire Unfolded

South San Joaquin County Fire Authority Chief Randall Bradley said the blaze is believed to have started on the roof of the Medline building. When crews arrived around 1 p.m., they encountered heavy fire pouring from the roof.

Conditions made the fight especially brutal. Bradley pointed to high winds, soaring temperatures, and low humidity as factors that severely complicated firefighting efforts. Crews attempted an interior attack but were unable to hold the fire as it spread across the sprawling facility.

Critical System Failures

Several infrastructure failures hampered the response. Bradley said the building’s sprinklers were not operating, though he was unsure why. Compounding the problem, fire hydrants within the facility had no water pressure. He described the failure of the private water system as something that significantly impacted the entire firefight.

The danger did not stay contained. Embers from the main blaze sparked several smaller fires nearby. As of around 10 p.m., the fire was still burning, and Bradley said crews were expected to remain at the site for a couple of days to fully extinguish it.

He underscored just how rare an event this was, noting that warehouse fires of this size have occurred only a handful of times in the nation’s history.

Workers and Spread

Roughly 900 people work at the facility, though only about 120 were on-site when the fire broke out. Crews managed to halt one fire that had extended to a FedEx warehouse, where some pallets and containers had ignited outside the building.

Mutual aid resources also stopped spot fires that had broken out near Schulte Road and Larch Road, as well as near Tracy Municipal Airport.

When asked about air quality, Bradley said no protections were being issued at this time. Aerial footage captured at the height of the blaze showed a massive wall of black smoke, with big rig containers and other vehicles engulfed in flames. The parkway will remain closed while crews continue their work, and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

What We Know About Medline Industries

Medline describes itself as the largest provider of medical-surgical products. The company, which just marked its 60th anniversary this month, distributes about 335,000 healthcare products. Of those, roughly 190,000 fall under the Medline brand, and about 70,000 are self-manufactured, according to a recent news release. Its operations span 70 global distribution centers and 30 manufacturing facilities worldwide.

In a statement, the company confirmed the fire at its Tracy facility and said all employees and on-site personnel were accounted for. Medline added that it was coordinating closely with local authorities and first responders to assess the damage and would share more details as they became available.

Impact on Northern California Hospitals

The fire raises potential supply concerns for major health systems across Northern California. Medline supplies a number of prominent hospitals and providers in the region, including Sutter Health, Kaweah Health, Enloe Health, Stanford Medicine, Carson Tahoe Health, and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

For now, the destruction of such a large distribution hub leaves open questions about how the disruption might ripple through the medical supply chain, even as crews continue battling a fire that officials say ranks among the most unusual they have ever seen.
