Trump Picks Personal Lawyer James McDonald to Lead Manhattan’s Powerful Federal Prosecutor’s Office

The James McDonald US Attorney appointment marks one of President Donald Trump’s most consequential staffing moves yet, placing one of his own personal lawyers at the helm of arguably the most prestigious prosecutor’s office in the country. Trump announced Saturday that he intends to install McDonald as the top federal prosecutor in Manhattan, filling a vacancy created by his own reshuffling of senior officials.

Who Is James McDonald?

James M. McDonald is hardly a stranger to the office he’s now been tapped to lead. An Oklahoma native, he previously worked as an assistant U.S. attorney in the same Southern District of New York where he would now serve as the chief prosecutor.

His résumé spans both government and elite private practice. McDonald served as a financial regulator during Trump’s first term, holding the post of director of enforcement at the Commodity Futures Trading Commission from 2017 to 2021. Earlier in his career, he worked in the White House counsel’s office under President George W. Bush as a deputy associate counsel. He also clerked for Chief Justice John Roberts and is a graduate of Harvard College and the University of Virginia School of Law.

Today, McDonald is a partner at the prominent law firm Sullivan & Cromwell, a connection that places him firmly within the legal establishment.

A Lawyer Close to Trump’s Own Legal Battles

What sets this pick apart is McDonald’s direct involvement in Trump’s personal legal affairs. He is part of the legal team handling Trump’s pending appeal of felony convictions in New York tied to hush money payments made to adult film actor Stormy Daniels during the 2016 presidential campaign.

His recent work has also intersected with high-profile Justice Department matters. McDonald was part of the legal team that, just last month, secured a favorable result for Indian billionaire Gautam Adani after the Trump administration’s Justice Department dropped a fraud and conspiracy case that had originally been brought under the Biden administration.

That close proximity to Trump’s own interests is likely to draw scrutiny, given that the role he’s stepping into wields enormous prosecutorial power.

Why the SDNY Job Matters

The U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York is widely regarded as one of the most influential positions in the entire Justice Department. The office carries a sweeping portfolio that includes some of the nation’s most significant cases.

That portfolio spans:

  • Terrorism and espionage prosecutions.
  • Securities fraud and complex financial crimes.
  • Public corruption investigations.

During his earlier CFTC tenure, McDonald was no stranger to aggressive enforcement, helping the agency ramp up its pursuit of cryptocurrency-related fraud, including a multimillion-dollar Bitcoin fraud case handled in the Southern District in 2019.

Filling a Vacancy of Trump’s Own Making

The opening exists because of a chain reaction Trump set off earlier in the week. McDonald would replace Jay Clayton, who had served as the district’s U.S. attorney since 2025.

Trump nominated Clayton on Thursday to become the next director of national intelligence, and moved just two days later to fill the resulting SDNY vacancy with McDonald. Senate Majority Leader John Thune signaled that the chamber would move quickly to confirm Clayton in his new cabinet role.

Praise From the President

Trump made the announcement on his Truth Social platform, lavishing praise on his pick. He expressed confidence that McDonald, whom he referred to warmly as “Jamie,” would deliver strong results for the country.

In his post, Trump emphasized that McDonald commands the respect of the law enforcement community, the broader legal world, and the judicial bench, predicting he would work effectively with all of them. He closed by wishing McDonald well and declaring he had no doubt about the lawyer’s future success.

The reaction from within the office itself was welcoming. Nicholas Biase, a spokesperson for the Manhattan U.S. attorney’s office, said the office welcomed the president’s choice to lead the SDNY and described McDonald as widely respected.

The Bigger Picture

The McDonald announcement is one piece of a broader shuffle at the top of the administration’s national security and law enforcement ranks. The Clayton nomination came as pressure mounted from Congress to name a permanent successor to Tulsi Gabbard, who resigned as national intelligence director the previous month.

That search had not been smooth. Trump faced intense pushback over his decision to name Bill Pulte, head of the Federal Housing Finance Agency, as acting director in the interim. By elevating Clayton to the intelligence post and slotting McDonald into the SDNY role, Trump has moved to settle two of his more contentious personnel questions at once — though the choice of a personal attorney for such a powerful prosecutorial seat may keep the conversation going for some time.
