Deadly Weekend in Chicago: 5 Killed, 22 Wounded as Mass Shooting Rocks Roseland

A violent weekend swept across Chicago, leaving at least five people dead and 22 others wounded in a string of shootings since Friday afternoon. The bloodshed included a horrifying mass shooting in the Roseland neighborhood that injured a dozen people, casting a shadow over what was meant to be a weekend of celebration.

A Mass Shooting in Roseland

The most devastating incident unfolded on the South Side, where 12 people were wounded in a single attack. According to Chicago police, a large crowd had gathered in the 200 block of West 95th Street when a red SUV drove past and two people inside opened fire shortly after 11 p.m. on Friday.

When officers arrived, they discovered two victims among the chaos: a 32-year-old woman with two gunshot wounds to her back, taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, and a 44-year-old man with four graze wounds, transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center. Both were reported in good condition.

The Toll Mounts

Eleven additional victims, ranging in age from 17 to 47, were also struck by gunfire. Many self-transported to area hospitals, with injuries spanning from graze wounds to critical conditions:

  • A 38-year-old woman with body graze wounds — fair condition
  • A 47-year-old man shot in the knee — fair condition
  • A 36-year-old woman with multiple gunshot wounds — fair condition
  • A 32-year-old man shot in the head — fair condition
  • A 32-year-old woman with multiple gunshot wounds — fair condition
  • A 17-year-old boy shot in the thigh — critical condition
  • A 22-year-old woman shot in the thigh — fair condition
  • A 30-year-old man with multiple gunshot wounds — fair condition
  • A 27-year-old man shot multiple times — fair condition
  • A 26-year-old man with multiple gunshot wounds — critical condition
  • A 26-year-old man who was hurt but declined treatment; it was unclear whether he had been shot

The sheer number of victims underscored the scale of the violence that erupted in a matter of seconds.

City Leaders Respond

Mayor Brandon Johnson announced that the city would open an emergency assistance center in the affected neighborhood. Members of Chicago’s Crisis Assistance Response and Engagement program were also set to provide support and canvass the area.

Johnson condemned the attack, noting that a night meant for Juneteenth celebration and community reflection had been shattered by a horrific act of violence. He offered his thoughts and prayers to the victims and pledged accountability for those responsible. As temperatures rise, he urged residents to stay vigilant, check on one another, and embrace de-escalation.

Alderman Anthony Beale of the 9th Ward described himself as heartbroken by the senseless shooting. He reflected on how quickly an ordinary summer night had been torn apart by gunfire, leaving families in fear and an entire community shaken. Beale lamented the broader toll of gun violence, saying it not only wounds those caught in the crossfire but also erodes the joy and sense of security that hold neighborhoods together.

A Weekend of Bloodshed Beyond Roseland

The Roseland mass shooting was only part of a grim weekend tally. Several other fatal shootings claimed lives across the city.

Just hours before the mass shooting, a 29-year-old man standing on the sidewalk in the 11900 block of South Michigan Avenue was killed around 5:15 p.m. when an SUV drove by and opened fire. He suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the face and body and was pronounced dead at Roseland Hospital. A 70-year-old bystander was also struck and taken to Christ Medical Center in stable condition.

Other deadly incidents included:

  • A 33-year-old man found shot to death around 8:55 p.m. in the 3700 block of West 30th Street in Little Village
  • A 34-year-old man discovered just before 10 p.m. in the 1100 block of West Latrobe Avenue in Austin with a fatal chest wound
  • A 50-year-old man shot in the chest in the first block of West 75th Street in Grand Crossing, who later died at St. Bernard Hospital
  • A 37-year-old man killed early Saturday in the 500 block of West 38th Street in Bridgeport, found around 12:15 a.m. with a gunshot wound to the neck

In addition to these fatalities, at least 10 other people were wounded in separate shootings since 5 p.m. Friday.

A City Grappling With Violence

The weekend’s violence has once again thrust Chicago’s struggle with gun crime into sharp focus. For the families of those killed and the dozens left injured, a season meant for celebration has instead brought grief and fear.

As investigators work to identify those responsible, city leaders are calling on residents to look out for one another and help break the cycle of violence. For the Roseland community and others touched by the bloodshed, the road to healing — and to a renewed sense of safety — remains uncertain.
