Simi Valley Stabbing Turns Into Hospital Shooting: One Chaotic Day in Ventura County

The Simi Valley stabbing that unfolded in the early hours of Thursday, July 2, set off an extraordinary chain of events that would stretch across two cities and involve multiple law enforcement agencies before the day was through. What began as a violent domestic dispute inside a family home ended hours later with police gunfire echoing through a hospital in neighboring Thousand Oaks.

A Violent Start to the Day

Just before 1:30 a.m., officers with the Simi Valley Police Department were dispatched to a home in the 2000 block of Clover Street. According to police, the call came in as an unknown problem, reportedly placed by a family member living in the residence. The neighborhood sits near the center of the city, a quiet stretch of single-family homes not far from a local school.

What officers found upon arrival was anything but ordinary. A husband and wife, both in their mid-40s, were suffering from stab wounds. Investigators believe the sequence of violence was deliberate and self-directed at its conclusion.

According to police, the account pieced together from the scene suggests the following:

  • The husband allegedly attacked his wife inside the home first.
  • He then reportedly turned a blade on himself.
  • Blood was found on the floors and walls of the residence, underscoring the severity of the confrontation.

Both individuals were rushed by ambulance to a local trauma center for treatment.

Others Inside the Home

One of the more sobering details to emerge is that the couple was not alone when the violence erupted. Authorities said four other adults and one child, all family members, were inside the house at the time.

Despite the chaos, police were quick to reassure the community that there was no broader danger. Investigators said no additional suspects were believed to be involved and that the public faced no ongoing risk from the incident.

As for the weapon itself, officials indicated the picture wasn’t immediately clear. A police sergeant noted that investigators recovered two knives and a machete from the scene and were still working to determine which item was actually used in the attack.

An Arrest and a Grave Condition

Following the initial investigation, the case was quickly classified as a domestic violence attempted homicide. The 46-year-old husband was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

His wife, meanwhile, underwent surgery for her injuries. In an encouraging development amid a grim story, authorities said she is expected to survive.

Because the husband’s own injuries required hospitalization, he was admitted to Los Robles Regional Medical Center in Thousand Oaks for continued treatment and evaluation. Throughout that stay, he remained in police custody, kept under the constant watch of a Simi Valley police officer.

The Second Crisis: A Shooting Inside the Hospital

Just when the situation might have seemed contained, it took a dramatic and unexpected turn. Around 12:20 p.m., roughly eleven hours after the stabbing, gunfire rang out on an upper floor of the medical center, triggering a massive law enforcement response.

The shots, it was quickly determined, had been fired by the very Simi Valley officer assigned to guard the suspect. According to the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office, the situation began when the officer noticed the man needed medical attention and summoned hospital staff to assess him. During that medical evaluation, an incident occurred that resulted in the officer opening fire.

Authorities have been deliberately guarded about exactly what happened in those critical moments. Neither agency has explained what prompted the officer to shoot or whether the suspect posed a specific threat at the time. What is known is that the man was struck by gunfire, received immediate treatment from the hospital staff already present, and was left in stable condition. He remained in police custody afterward, and the officer involved was not harmed.

A Community Left in Shock

For neighbors on Clover Street, the news was almost impossible to reconcile with the family they thought they knew. One next-door neighbor described the couple as genuinely great people who had moved into the area about four years earlier.

The heartbreak was compounded by the timing. According to that same neighbor, the family had recently welcomed a new granddaughter, an event they had celebrated with obvious joy. She spoke of feeling devastated for the family and struggling to imagine what they must be enduring, particularly so soon after such a happy milestone.

That contrast, between a family recently celebrating new life and one now shattered by violence, captures just how suddenly domestic tragedy can strike, often behind doors that appear perfectly ordinary from the outside.

Multiple Investigations Underway

The unusual nature of the day’s events, spanning two separate crimes in two different jurisdictions, has drawn several agencies into overlapping investigations. Each is handling a distinct piece of the puzzle.

Here’s how responsibility has been divided:

  • The Simi Valley Police Department is investigating the original stabbing and attempted murder.
  • The Ventura County Sheriff’s Office has taken the lead on the officer-involved shooting, since it occurred within its jurisdiction in Thousand Oaks.
  • The Ventura County District Attorney’s Office is participating in the shooting investigation.
  • The Simi Valley Police Department’s Professional Standards Bureau is conducting a separate administrative review of the officer’s actions.

Officials emphasized that both cases remain active and ongoing, and they are withholding additional details to protect the integrity of the investigations. The names of both the suspect and the officer involved in the shooting had not been released.

Reassurance From the Hospital

Given that a shooting took place inside an operating medical facility, Los Robles moved quickly to calm any fears. In a statement, the hospital said all patients, staff, and visitors were safe and that the facility was operating normally. Officials stressed that their priority remained providing uninterrupted, high-quality care to their patients, and law enforcement confirmed there was no threat to the public at any point.

A Day That Raises Difficult Questions

The events of July 2 leave behind a trail of unanswered questions, chief among them what exactly transpired in that hospital room to prompt an officer to fire his weapon. As investigators from multiple agencies work to reconstruct both the original attack and the shooting that followed, the full story is still coming into focus.

What’s already clear is the human toll. A marriage ended in bloodshed, a wife fights to recover from surgery, a family, including a young child, witnessed unspeakable violence in their own home, and a suspect now faces serious charges even as he recovers from a police shooting.

For anyone affected by situations like this, resources exist. This story touches on domestic violence, a serious and sometimes deadly issue, and those who need support are encouraged to reach out to local advocates or a domestic violence helpline. If you or someone you know is in immediate danger, contacting emergency services remains the safest first step.
