Possible Measles Exposure Reported at Three Bay Area Locations

Health officials are warning the public about a possible Bay Area measles exposure after an infected Santa Clara County resident visited three busy locations earlier this month. The alert covers San Francisco International Airport, a San Jose Trader Joe’s, and the International Halal Market, all on June 8.

Where and When the Exposure Happened

According to the county’s health department, the resident who had been exposed to measles passed through several public spaces on that day. The specific locations and times were:

  • San Francisco International Airport (SFO), from 8:30 to 11 a.m.
  • Trader Joe’s on Coleman Avenue in San Jose, between 8 and 10 p.m.
  • International Halal Market on E. Santa Clara Street, also between 8 and 10 p.m.

Officials are urging anyone who may have visited these places during the listed hours to watch for symptoms and report any that develop.

Who Should Be Especially Cautious

Dr. Sarah Rodman, Santa Clara County’s public health officer, emphasized that certain groups face higher risk and should be particularly alert. She specifically pointed to people who are pregnant, infants, those with compromised immunity, and anyone who is unvaccinated as needing to be aware of the potential exposure.

A Broader Trend of Rising Cases

The local alert comes against a backdrop of growing concern nationally. UCSF infectious disease specialist Dr. Peter Chin-Hong noted that measles cases are on the rise across the United States.

He attributed much of that increase to a surge in vaccine exemptions, particularly those being granted at the kindergarten level. By his estimate, somewhere between 5 and 10 percent of Californians are not vaccinated against measles, leaving a meaningful share of the population vulnerable.

The timing adds another layer of worry. As visitors from around the world arrive for major events such as the World Cup, health professionals and residents alike are increasingly attentive to the risk of preventable diseases spreading.

The sentiment was echoed by Teresa Perkins, a shopper at the affected San Jose Trader Joe’s, who expressed a wish that those who are able to get vaccinated against preventable diseases would do so for the benefit of everyone.

Understanding Measles and Its Symptoms

Chin-Hong described measles as one of the most transmissible infectious diseases, which is part of what makes exposure alerts like this one so important.

Symptoms to watch for include:

  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Runny nose
  • Red eyes
  • A rash

Importantly, these symptoms can appear anywhere from 7 to 21 days after exposure, meaning those who were at the affected locations may need to stay watchful for several weeks.

The Protective Power of Vaccination

There is reassuring news for those who are immunized. Chin-Hong said the risk of becoming sick is low for anyone who has received the two-dose measles vaccine, underscoring why vaccination remains the most effective defense.

For now, there is also a measure of relief at the local level: Santa Clara County Public Health reported that no new cases of measles have been identified since the June 8 exposure.

What to Do Next

If you believe you were at any of the three locations during the windows listed, the best course of action is to monitor yourself for symptoms over the coming weeks and contact a healthcare provider if any appear, especially if you fall into one of the higher-risk groups. Calling ahead before visiting a clinic can also help prevent further spread.

This is a developing public health situation, and staying informed through official county updates is the surest way to keep yourself and those around you safe.
