Chaos Hits Swatch Stores Worldwide as Fans Rush the Audemars Piguet Pocket Watch Collab

Chaos Erupts at Swatch Stores Over the Audemars Piguet Pocket Watch Collab

The launch of the Swatch Audemars Piguet pocket watch was meant to be a celebration of two iconic watch brands joining forces. Instead, it descended into worldwide chaos. When the highly anticipated collaboration dropped on Saturday, crowds swelled to dangerous levels, police were called to stores across multiple countries, and several locations were forced to shut their doors entirely.

For a product designed to make luxury accessible, the rollout was anything but smooth.

A Collaboration Built on Hype

The frenzy traces back to the appeal of the partnership itself. The new release — known as the Royal Pop collection — blends Audemars Piguet’s sleek Royal Oak design with Swatch’s colorful POP line from the 1980s.

What made the drop so irresistible was the price gap it bridged. Audemars Piguet watches can cost tens of thousands of dollars, placing them far out of reach for most buyers. Pairing that prestige with Swatch, a famously affordable brand, created a rare opportunity to own a piece of high-end watch heritage for a fraction of the usual cost.

Hype had been building steadily since the two companies unveiled the collaboration earlier in the week. By the time the watches went on sale, anticipation had reached a fever pitch — and so had the crowds.

Fans Camped Out for Days

The excitement was so intense that dedicated enthusiasts didn’t just show up early — they camped outside stores for days in advance. Some fans staked out the Times Square Swatch location well ahead of the debut, determined not to miss their chance.

They weren’t alone. Alongside genuine collectors stood a wave of resellers, all hoping to flip the watches for a quick profit. That mix of passionate fans and opportunistic buyers only added fuel to the fire.

Stores Shut Down Over Safety Concerns

By Saturday morning, the situation had spiraled. The crowds grew so large and unruly that Swatch was forced to close several stores across the United States and Canada, citing “public safety considerations.” As the day wore on, even more closures followed.

In a statement shared online, the company explained that some stores had to be shut in coordination with security staff and local authorities to keep everyone safe.

A Disturbing Scene at Roosevelt Field

One of the most chaotic scenes unfolded at the Swatch store inside the Roosevelt Field shopping mall on Long Island.

A TikTok user who was present, posting under the name ggchang.nyc, captured and shared footage of the event. His video showed a large, jostling crowd packed into the parking garage. He told Business Insider that police officers used pepper spray on the crowd to regain control.

The Nassau County Police Department offered a partial account. A spokesperson said he could not confirm whether pepper spray had been used, but did say:

  • Officers arrived at the mall at around 1:40 a.m. after store employees called for help
  • Several people were arrested at the scene

“It Felt Like a Wave”

The same TikTok user described an event that felt disorganized from the very start. He arrived at the store around 1:30 a.m., though others had already been waiting for hours.

According to his account, much of the confusion stemmed from unclear instructions about which lines attendees were supposed to join. Tensions peaked around 6 a.m., when employees began letting people in to buy the pocket watches.

At that point, people near the back of the crowd grew restless and started pushing forward. He compared the resulting crush to a wave — an uncomfortable, forceful squeeze of bodies. The atmosphere felt especially tense, he said, with officers shouting and physically engaging with attendees as the situation escalated.

After hours of waiting, he left around 8 a.m. empty-handed, without the watch he had come for.

Swatch Urges Calm

As the bedlam spread, Swatch issued a public plea asking fans “not to rush to our stores.”

The company tried to reassure buyers that there was no need to panic. It said the Royal Pop collection would remain available for several months, adding that in some countries queues of more than 50 people could not be accepted and that sales might need to be paused.

The message was clear: the watches weren’t going anywhere, and risking injury for one simply wasn’t worth it.

Resellers Cash In

For some, the chaos paid off handsomely. While Swatch is selling the pocket watches for around $400, a number of buyers who managed to grab one immediately listed them on eBay.

There, prices have soared dramatically — with some listings reaching as high as $15,000. That staggering markup helps explain why so many resellers were willing to brave the crowds in the first place, and why the demand turned dangerous so quickly.

The Bottom Line

The Swatch Audemars Piguet pocket watch collaboration succeeded wildly in one sense — it generated enormous demand and undeniable excitement. But that same success exposed how badly a hyped product launch can go wrong.

With store closures, arrests, reports of pepper spray, and fans walking away injured in spirit if not in body, the Royal Pop drop became a cautionary tale. The watches may remain on sale for months, but the memory of this weekend’s mayhem is likely to linger far longer.
