Fireworks-Laden Trailer Erupts in Dazzling Blaze on Tennessee Interstate

A dramatic Tennessee highway fireworks fire turned a Saturday evening commute into an unexpected pre-Fourth of July spectacle, as a trailer packed with pyrotechnics erupted along a busy interstate, authorities said.

A Roadside Show Nobody Asked For

Cellphone video captured the jaw-dropping scene on a Tennessee highway Saturday evening, when a trailer hauling a load of fireworks burst into flames and began launching its explosive cargo in every direction.

First responders had been called to a reported vehicle fire on northbound Interstate 75 in the community of Ooltewah. When they arrived, they discovered a stopped work truck towing a box trailer that was fully ablaze — and popping with pyrotechnics.

“The trailer was full of fireworks, all of which became involved in the fire and exploded during the incident,” the Tri-Community Volunteer Fire Department said in a statement.

A Genuine Danger to Drivers

While the footage may have looked like a holiday celebration, the situation was anything but safe. In a Facebook video, the fire department noted that fireworks “were going off in different directions, endangering drivers.”

The video showed pyrotechnics rocketing spectacularly out of the trailer as thick, dark smoke spiraled into the sky above the highway.

Quick Response and Road Closure

Authorities acted swiftly to contain the danger. They shut down the highway — located roughly 25 miles east of Chattanooga — both as a precaution and to allow first responders to navigate through traffic, according to the fire department. Chattanooga city crews assisted with the effort.

Fortunately, there were no injuries reported. The cause of the fire was not immediately available, and the roadway eventually reopened once cleanup was complete.

Unanswered Questions and Tennessee’s Fireworks Rules

It remains unclear where the trailer and its fiery cargo were ultimately headed. For context on the state’s regulations:

  • Consumer fireworks are generally legal in Tennessee, though local governments retain the authority to prohibit them.
  • Public fireworks displays require display permits under state rules.
  • The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office, which covers the area where the fire occurred, says the safe discharge of fireworks is allowed but may be banned by individual cities.

For now, the incident stands as a vivid — and slightly alarming — reminder of just how volatile fireworks can be, especially as the busy Fourth of July season approaches. No one was hurt, but the unplanned display along I-75 certainly gave passing motorists a show they won’t soon forget.
