First Alert Forecast: Dangerous Heat, Humidity, and Storms Set to Grip the Region Next Week

Minnesota heat forecast has prompted the state’s Weather Authority to issue a Forecast First Alert for Monday through Thursday, as a stretch of intense heat and humidity prepares to settle over the region. The combination of soaring temperatures, sticky air, and warm nights makes this more than a single uncomfortable day, raising real health concerns for the days ahead.

How the Heat Builds

The weekend offers a comparatively gentle start before conditions ramp up. Saturday brings highs in the mid-80s under partly cloudy skies, though humidity will begin creeping in and the air will start to feel heavier.

Sunday continues the upward trend. An early chance of storms gives way to partly cloudy, hot, and humid conditions by afternoon, with highs again reaching the mid-80s. The more telling figure, however, is Sunday night’s low. Temperatures will dip only into the middle 70s, offering little overnight relief as the region heads into Monday.

The First Alert Stretch

Monday marks the official start of the Forecast First Alert period. Highs are expected to climb into the middle 90s, with a forecast high near 96 degrees. Once humidity is factored in, it could feel closer to 95 to 105 degrees at times.

The heat does not let up afterward. Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday will all see afternoon highs in the low to mid-90s, with heat index values once again ranging from 95 to 105 degrees. The central concern is not a single hot afternoon but several consecutive days of high heat, heavy humidity, and notably warm nights.

The Humidity Problem

Dew points will remain elevated throughout the week, leaving the air feeling thick and oppressive. Overnight lows holding in the 70s for several nights will limit the body’s ability to cool down and recover after each day’s heat.

That absence of nighttime relief poses a particular risk for vulnerable groups, including:

  • People without reliable air conditioning
  • Outdoor workers and athletes
  • Children and the elderly
  • Anyone managing existing health concerns

Staying Safe in the Heat

Heat ranks as the leading weather-related cause of death, making caution essential. Forecasters urge residents to listen to their bodies and move quickly to shade or air conditioning if they begin to overheat.

Recommended precautions include drinking plenty of water, taking frequent breaks, and limiting strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day. It is also important to check on young children, older adults, neighbors, and anyone who may lack access to reliable cooling. Pets should have ample water, shade, and a cool place to rest as well.

Nighttime Storm Chances

Beyond the heat, forecasters are tracking several rounds of nighttime storms throughout the week. A chance of showers and storms returns Monday night, followed by additional opportunities Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday nights. At this point, the highest storm chances appear to fall on Tuesday and Wednesday nights, though the exact timing and intensity remain uncertain and will require close monitoring.

Potential Storm Threats

With abundant heat and humidity in place, any storms that develop could have ample energy to feed on. While it remains too early to pinpoint specific severe weather threats, strong storms are worth watching, especially during the evening and overnight hours.

For now, the primary focus of the Forecast First Alert is the extended span of heat and humidity from Monday through Thursday, with feels-like temperatures potentially reaching 95 to 105 degrees each day.
