Nvidia’s Jensen Huang Says Trump Personally Asked Him to Join the China Trip

The Jensen Huang China trip came together in an unexpected way, according to the Nvidia CEO himself. Speaking to reporters in Beijing on Thursday, Huang said that U.S. President Donald Trump personally “asked me to come” on the high-stakes summit — clearing up days of confusion about whether he would be part of the delegation at all.

A Late Addition to the Delegation

Huang’s presence on the trip wasn’t always a given. In fact, his name was noticeably absent from a list of executives making the journey that a White House official shared on Monday.

That changed quickly. By Tuesday, it was announced that Huang would indeed join the summit. According to a source familiar with the situation, the turnaround came after Trump saw media coverage of Huang’s absence from the delegation and called the Nvidia executive directly to ask him to come along. Huang then flew to Alaska to board Air Force One.

Trump himself addressed the matter in a social media post, confirming Huang was aboard Air Force One and pushing back on reports — including from CNBC — that the Nvidia boss had not originally been invited.

Huang’s Take on the Summit

Once in Beijing, Huang struck an enthusiastic and notably grand tone about the trip’s significance.

He described it as an incredible opportunity to represent the United States and to support Trump in what he called “one of the most important summits in human history.” He also pointed to the rapport between the two leaders, saying the relationship between President Xi and President Trump offered a chance to build a much stronger partnership.

Reflecting on the day’s events, Huang said the morning ceremony had been uplifting, describing both Xi and Trump as inspiring and welcoming.

Trade Takes Center Stage

The backdrop to all of this is trade, which sits at the top of the agenda in Beijing.

Trump has made his priorities clear, saying that opening up China for U.S. businesses would be his “first request” to Xi. He framed the goal in characteristically bold terms — asking Xi to “open up” China so that the visiting American business leaders could, in his words, work their magic and help bring the country to an even higher level.

That delegation is a heavyweight group. Alongside Huang, it includes:

  • Tesla CEO Elon Musk
  • Apple CEO Tim Cook
  • BlackRock CEO Larry Fink
  • Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg

For Nvidia specifically, China remains a market of enormous importance, which helps explain why Huang’s inclusion drew so much attention in the first place.

The Bottom Line

The story of the Jensen Huang China trip is, in many ways, a small window into how this summit is being shaped — with a last-minute phone call from the president altering the delegation and a tech CEO framing the visit in sweeping historical terms. With trade and market access dominating the agenda, and a roster of major American executives on the ground in Beijing, Huang’s late addition underscores just how central the business relationship between the two countries is to the entire trip.
