Powerful 7.8 Earthquake Strikes Southern Philippines, Killing at Least 19 and Triggering Tsunami Alerts

A devastating Philippines earthquake Mindanao event has left at least 19 people dead after a powerful magnitude-7.8 quake struck off the coast of Mindanao island in the southern Philippines, officials say. The disaster triggered tsunami alerts across multiple countries and caused widespread destruction.

When and Where It Struck

The earthquake hit on Monday at 07:37 local time (Sunday 23:37 GMT), unleashing tsunami warnings not only in the Philippines but also in Indonesia, Japan, and Australia. Several of those alerts were lifted hours later as the threat diminished.

Dramatic videos and images captured the moment buildings gave way, including footage of a Jollibee fast food restaurant reduced to rubble.

Casualties and Damage

The human toll has been significant and is still being assessed. Beyond the at least 19 confirmed deaths, a local official reported that at least 134 people were injured across several provinces — South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, and Sarangani — as well as the city of General Santos.

These figures, however, still require verification. The official count from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council typically arrives about a day after such an incident, as the agency compiles numbers from various sources including police, local officials, and disaster relief organizations.

Government Response

Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. moved quickly to reassure the public, stating that government agencies were coordinating their disaster response.

“The national government is moving and we will not leave Mindanao behind,” he promised.

Marcos also ordered the suspension of classes in affected areas — a decision made especially urgent because the quake coincided with the first day of the school year in the Philippines.

The timing led to some frightening scenes. In one video posted by a primary school in Davao Occidental province, dozens of terrified students were seen squatting on the shaking ground. The footage also showed a corrugated-roof shelter collapsing behind them, though the school said no one was injured.

Aftershocks and Infrastructure Impact

The initial quake was followed by intense seismic activity:

  • More than 130 aftershocks were recorded, ranging in magnitude from 1.3 to 6.7.
  • In the coastal province of Sarangani, power and communication networks were temporarily knocked out before later being restored.

General Santos, the city nearest the epicenter, holds particular significance in the Philippines. It is known as the country’s tuna capital and as the hometown of Manny Pacquiao, the world boxing champion who later turned to politics.

A Region on the Ring of Fire

Earthquakes are a frequent occurrence in the Philippines, which sits along the geologically volatile “Ring of Fire.” While most quakes there are minor and pass without serious consequence, some have proven deadly. Just last September, a magnitude-6.9 earthquake struck the central Visayas region, killing more than 70 people.

The Tsunami Threat

The quake’s offshore location prompted swift tsunami warnings across the Pacific. Shortly after the quake struck on Monday morning, authorities in Japan warned of tsunami waves up to one meter tall reaching its shores.

In the end, the observed waves were relatively modest:

  • A wave measuring a few centimeters was recorded in Japan’s southern prefecture of Okinawa.
  • A 20cm (0.7ft) wave was measured in the distant Ogasawara Islands.
  • Along the coasts of Indonesia, Palau, and the Philippines, waves ranged from a few centimeters up to 1.4m (4.6ft).

Looking Ahead

As rescue and relief efforts continue across Mindanao, the full scope of the disaster is still coming into focus. With official casualty figures expected to be updated and aftershocks continuing to rattle the region, authorities remain on alert. For now, the focus is on reaching those affected, restoring essential services, and ensuring that, as President Marcos pledged, Mindanao is not left behind.
