Secret Service Agent Hit by Buckshot in Correspondents’ Dinner Attack, Prosecutor Confirms

The Correspondents’ Dinner attack investigation has taken a major turn, with federal authorities now confirming that a Secret Service agent was struck by buckshot fired from the suspect’s own weapon during the chaotic incident in Washington. The disclosure clears up earlier speculation about whether the officer may have been hit accidentally during the response to the attack.

Prosecutor Confirms Source of the Shot

Jeanine Pirro, who serves as the U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia, made the announcement on Sunday during an appearance on CNN’s “State of the Union.” She stated that investigators had ruled out any possibility of friendly fire and confirmed that the projectile came directly from a weapon used by the suspect.

According to Pirro, forensic evidence revealed that a pellet from the buckshot fired by the defendant’s Mossberg pump-action shotgun was found embedded in the fibers of the officer’s bullet-resistant vest. She emphasized that the evidence is conclusive and clearly ties the shot to the suspect’s firearm.

This update comes just days after Pirro had initially indicated there was no sign of friendly fire involved in the April 25 incident at a Washington hotel. Her latest remarks go a step further by confirming the exact source of the round that struck the agent.

Suspect Identified as Cole Tomas Allen

The man at the center of the case has been identified as Cole Tomas Allen, a 31-year-old resident of Torrance, California. According to officials, Allen attempted to break into the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner with the intent of harming President Donald Trump.

Allen was injured during the chaos that unfolded that night, though he was not struck by gunfire. He remains in custody as he awaits trial. The Secret Service agent who was hit by the buckshot survived the incident.

Before the alleged attack, Allen reportedly worked as a part-time tutor for a test preparation company. He was also known to be an amateur video game developer, a detail that has added a layer of curiosity to the public profile of the accused.

Defense Files New Court Document

On Sunday, Allen’s legal team submitted a filing to the court informing the judge that their client had been removed from suicide watch. As a result, they withdrew an earlier motion that had formally requested he be taken off such supervision. Attempts to reach Allen’s attorneys for additional comment on Sunday were unsuccessful, as a phone call placed to their office went unanswered.

Charges and Possible Sentencing

Allen is facing serious federal charges, including attempted assassination of the president of the United States. In addition, he has been charged with two firearms-related offenses, one of which is discharging a weapon during the commission of a violent crime.

If he is convicted of the attempted assassination charge alone, Allen could spend the rest of his life behind bars. The added firearms charges could further increase the severity of his sentence if a jury finds him guilty.

A Disturbing Scene Caught on Video

Last Thursday, Pirro shared a video on social media that captured the moment of the alleged attack. The footage reportedly shows a man armed with firearms and knives attempting to push his way past security and into the ballroom of the venue.

The hall was filled with journalists, members of the administration, political figures, and other guests attending the high-profile media event. The video has fueled public concern over the security challenges associated with such large gatherings, especially those involving top government officials.

For days after the incident, questions had circulated about how exactly the Secret Service agent was wounded. Some early reports left open the possibility that the officer might have been struck by a bullet fired by another responding officer during the confusion. Pirro’s latest statement appears to put those questions to rest.

Concerns Over Political Violence in America

The Correspondents’ Dinner attack has reignited national conversations about political violence and the safety of public figures in the United States. Events that bring together top officials, members of the media, and political insiders have always required extensive security planning, but recent incidents have prompted calls for even tighter protective measures.

Law enforcement agencies, including the Secret Service, are reportedly reviewing their protocols to determine if any additional safeguards are needed for future events of this scale. The fact that an armed individual was able to get close enough to fire a weapon at a Secret Service officer is being treated as a serious breach that demands further examination.

The Road to Trial

As the case progresses, Allen will continue to be held in federal custody. His upcoming trial is expected to draw significant media attention given the nature of the charges and the high-profile target of the alleged plot.

Federal prosecutors are expected to rely heavily on the forensic evidence linking Allen’s shotgun to the wounded officer’s vest. Combined with video footage and eyewitness accounts, the case against him appears to be building steadily.

For now, the Secret Service agent who was injured is recovering, and the broader investigation into how the attack unfolded continues. Officials have not ruled out the possibility of additional charges or further revelations as the legal process moves forward.

The Correspondents’ Dinner attack will likely remain one of the most discussed political security incidents of the year, raising lasting questions about safety, motive, and the broader climate of political tension in the country.
