Dr. Stuart R. Bell has been named interim president of the University of Florida, following a unanimous vote by the UF Board of Trustees. The appointment, set to take effect July 1, brings a seasoned higher education leader to the helm of one of the nation’s top public universities.
Bell steps into the role with a notable track record, having previously guided another major institution through a decade of significant growth and achievement.
A Unanimous Decision
The Board of Trustees voted unanimously to appoint Dr. Bell, reflecting strong confidence in his leadership. The decision builds on an earlier vote held on June 10, when the board unanimously selected him as the university’s next president.
His path to the position followed the process required under Florida law. The Presidential Search Committee was tasked with several key responsibilities, including:
- Designing the criteria for the search
- Identifying and vetting a broad pool of qualified candidates
- Recommending finalists to the Board of Trustees
That structured process ultimately led the board to Bell as its unanimous choice.
A Proven Leader From Alabama
Dr. Bell brings substantial experience to the University of Florida, having served as president of the University of Alabama from 2015 to 2025. During that decade, he oversaw meaningful progress across multiple areas of the institution.
His accomplishments at Alabama included:
- Strengthening academic standards
- Increasing student enrollment
- Advancing championship-caliber athletics
- Modernizing and expanding campus facilities
Beyond those achievements, the university also improved its retention rates under his leadership and earned prestigious R1 research status, a designation reserved for institutions with the highest levels of research activity.
Looking Ahead at UF
In accepting the role, Bell expressed enthusiasm about joining the University of Florida and building on its existing strengths. He called it a tremendous privilege to serve the institution, describing UF as one of the nation’s leading public universities.
He emphasized a collaborative approach, saying he looks forward to working alongside faculty, staff, students, alumni, and supporters to build on the university’s strong foundation and continue advancing its mission.
What Comes Next
While the Board of Trustees has made its decision, one final step remains. Dr. Bell’s appointment as interim president is subject to ratification by the Florida Board of Governors.
Pending that approval, Bell will officially assume leadership of the University of Florida on July 1, bringing his extensive experience to bear as the institution moves into its next chapter.
