Veteran character actor James Handy, a familiar face in films including Top Gun: Maverick, Jumanji, and Logan, has died at his Los Angeles home following a stabbing, allegedly carried out by his girlfriend’s son. He was 81.
What Happened
According to the Los Angeles Police Department, Handy was discovered in the front yard of his home in Tarzana, California, at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday. He was found unconscious with multiple stab wounds to the chest.
Authorities have arrested Michael Gledhill, 44, the son of Handy’s girlfriend, and charged him on suspicion of murder, with bail set at $2 million. Police noted that the suspect lived at the residence alongside his mother, who was the actor’s girlfriend.
The circumstances surrounding the arrest were stark. According to the police statement, a 911 caller said he had just killed a man, describing himself in unsettling terms. When officers arrived at the scene, Gledhill reportedly told them he was the person they were looking for.
A Long and Steady Career
Born in New York City, Handy built the kind of durable, decades-spanning career that defines a working character actor. He got his start in 1977 on the television series Ryan’s Hope and went on to amass a lengthy list of credits across film and television.
Audiences came to recognize him from a range of well-known projects, including roles in Logan, K-911, Law & Order, NCIS: Los Angeles, and Criminal Minds. His most recent screen appearance came in 2022’s Top Gun: Maverick, a fitting note to close out a career that touched some of the era’s most recognizable titles.
A Life Cut Short
Handy’s death marks a sudden and violent end for an actor who spent more than four decades quietly enriching the projects he appeared in. While he may not have been a household name, his presence was a steady fixture across generations of film and television, the kind of performer whose face audiences knew even when his name did not immediately come to mind.
As the legal process moves forward, the case remains under investigation, and details may continue to emerge in the days ahead. This is a developing story involving a violent crime, and out of respect for those affected, the focus rightly remains on both the loss of a longtime performer and the serious charges now before the courts.
