Virginia State University shooting investigators have arrested a 19-year-old man following an early morning attack that left five people wounded, one of them critically, and locked down the campus for the better part of a night.

Camron Harris, of Henrico, Virginia, was taken into custody on Saturday after officers located him concealed inside a dormitory closet.

What Happened

The gunfire erupted just after 1:30 a.m. local time on Saturday, immediately triggering a campus-wide lockdown. Students and staff were confined to their buildings while law enforcement searched the grounds.

The lockdown was not lifted until 8:21 a.m., meaning the university spent close to seven hours in emergency status while officers worked to determine whether the threat had been contained.

All five wounded individuals were transported to hospital. One arrived in critical condition. Their ages spanned from 17 to 23, and one victim, a 20-year-old student, has since been discharged. Authorities have not released any of their names.

Who Was Involved

According to Chesterfield County Police, Harris is not enrolled at the university. Four of the five people shot were also not students.

That detail reframes how the incident is likely to be understood. Rather than a dispute originating within the student body, the shooting appears to have involved individuals who were on campus but not part of it, a scenario that raises difficult questions about access control at open institutions.

Prosecutors have secured eight felony warrants against Harris. The charges include malicious wounding and use of a firearm during the commission of a felony.

No motive has been made public.

Confusion in the Early Hours

In an initial statement, the university indicated that authorities were pursuing multiple suspects. Police have since offered no further clarification on whether additional people are being sought or whether the early report reflected the uncertainty typical of a chaotic scene.

That kind of shifting information is common in the first hours after a campus incident, when witness accounts conflict and officers are working from incomplete pictures.

A Community Reacting

Arthur Fridrich, who previously served as the university’s director of distance education, expressed anguish over the attack, saying his heart bleeds for those who were shot and voicing hope that they recover fully without allowing the experience to define the rest of their lives.

Governor Abigail Spanberger posted on social media that she and her husband were praying for a swift recovery for the victims and that their thoughts were with the wider VSU community. She also thanked first responders and law enforcement for their work.

Timing That Cuts Deep

The shooting occurred just two days before the autumn semester was scheduled to begin.

That timing carries particular weight. Move-in periods and the days immediately preceding classes are typically marked by anticipation, reunions and orientation events. Instead, returning students face a start to the academic year defined by police tape and unanswered questions.

Virginia State University is a historically Black institution located in Ettrick, roughly 39 kilometres, or 24 miles, south of Richmond.

The Broader Pattern

Shootings at American colleges and universities are not rare events. The Gun Violence Archive, which tracks incidents nationally, documented 75 shootings at higher education institutions during 2025, affecting 100 victims in total.

Virginia in particular carries a heavy history. The 2007 attack at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University remains among the deadliest campus shootings in the country’s history, with 32 people killed and 17 wounded.

More recently, a gunman opened fire on a Reserve Officers’ Training Corps group at Old Dominion University in Norfolk earlier this year, killing an instructor and wounding two others.

Why Campuses Are Difficult to Secure

University campuses present a structural challenge that few other institutions face. They are designed to be permeable, with public walkways, shared facilities, visiting families and community events all part of normal operation.

That openness is central to what a university is. It also means that conventional security measures used at airports or government buildings are largely impractical across sprawling grounds with dozens of entry points.

Institutions typically rely instead on:

• Rapid mass notification systems to alert students within minutes
• Lockdown protocols that secure individual buildings rather than the perimeter
• Campus police forces coordinating with county and state agencies
• Access controls limited to residence halls and specific facilities

The VSU response reflected that model. The alert went out, buildings were secured, and the search continued until a suspect was located.

What Comes Next

With Harris in custody and facing eight felony counts, the case now moves into the court system. Investigators will continue working to establish a motive and to confirm whether anyone else was involved.

For the university, the immediate priority shifts to supporting the wounded, providing counselling resources, and deciding how to open a semester that has already been marked by trauma. Those conversations tend to be difficult, and they rarely have clean answers.
