Colorado Western Slope fires have erupted across the region near the Utah border, scorching tens of thousands of acres and forcing residents to prepare for possible evacuation. With dry, dangerous conditions fueling the flames, communities throughout western Colorado are watching the situation closely as crews work to keep the fires in check.
Fires Near the Utah Border
Several blazes are currently burning across Colorado’s Western Slope, and the damage is already substantial. Pre-evacuation notices have been issued for parts of Mesa County close to the Utah line, signaling that residents should be ready to leave at a moment’s notice.
Two of the fires, known as the Jones and Snyder Mesa fires, are burning just outside Fruita. While an official acreage count has not yet been released, perimeter maps from the National Interagency Fire Center suggest the fires have likely consumed close to 30,000 acres.
It remains unclear whether any structures are under direct threat, but the impact on the surrounding area was hard to miss. Smoke could be seen blanketing the landscape near Fruita on Saturday afternoon, and the community of Glade Park sits near the fire’s perimeter. The Lower Valley Fire District in Fruita urged residents to stay mindful of air quality as wildfire smoke spread through the area.
Mandatory Evacuations Near Ouray
The danger is not confined to Mesa County. North of Ouray, mandatory evacuations are already underway because of the Gold Mountain Fire, with additional areas placed under pre-evacuation notices.
According to local reporting, the county emergency manager described the fire as roughly 50 acres in size and still spreading. The cause has been traced to a specific incident: the Ouray County Sheriff’s Office reported that the blaze ignited after a tree fell onto a power line, sparking the flames.
A Region Under Red Flag Warning
Compounding the threat, a red flag warning is in effect across the entire Western Slope. The warning, which signals heightened wildfire danger due to conditions favorable for rapid fire growth, is set to remain active on Sunday from noon until 10 p.m.
The combination of multiple active fires and dangerous weather has put the region on edge. Here is a quick summary of the unfolding situation:
- The Jones and Snyder Mesa fires near Fruita may have burned close to 30,000 acres.
- Pre-evacuation notices are in place for parts of Mesa County near Utah.
- The Gold Mountain Fire north of Ouray has triggered mandatory evacuations.
- A red flag warning covers the whole Western Slope through Sunday evening.
As firefighters continue their efforts, residents across western Colorado are being urged to stay alert, monitor official updates, and be prepared to act quickly should conditions worsen. With the red flag warning extending into Sunday, the coming hours will be critical in determining how far these fires spread.
