The case of the Monaco bombing suspect has taken a dark and dramatic turn. A woman wanted over last week’s bomb attack in Monaco, which seriously injured a Ukraine-born business tycoon, has been found shot dead near Kyiv, deepening the mystery surrounding an incident that has shaken the wealthy Mediterranean principality.
A Grim Discovery
Ukrainian prosecutors announced on Tuesday that the suspect had been found with a gunshot wound to the head. In connection with the case, two men were arrested, including a serving officer with Ukraine’s military intelligence agency, known as HUR, and a former law enforcement officer.
The woman at the center of the investigation had already been the subject of an international manhunt. Just days earlier, on Friday, Interpol issued a red notice for 39-year-old Anastasiia Berezovska, a Ukrainian national who also speaks German.
That red notice, a formal request for law enforcement agencies worldwide to locate and provisionally arrest a suspect pending extradition, stated that Berezovska was wanted by Monaco. The charges against her were serious, including attempted murder, placing an explosive device in a public place with criminal intent, and criminal conspiracy.
The Intelligence Connection
The most explosive element of the case lies in how investigators tied the two arrested men to the attack. According to prosecutors, Berezovska received cryptocurrency payments from the pair, which led authorities to treat them as individuals potentially involved in the attempted murder in Monaco.
Prosecutors were careful to note one crucial detail: the serving HUR officer was said to be acting on his own initiative and had not informed his superiors about his contacts with Berezovska. That distinction may prove significant as the political implications of the case unfold.
Adding to the disturbing nature of the investigation, prosecutors released footage showing a blood-stained “torture chamber” allegedly discovered during searches of the men’s properties. The room reportedly contained hammers and other equipment. The full account provided by prosecutors could not be independently verified.
A Politically Sensitive Moment for Kyiv
The timing of these revelations could hardly be worse for Ukraine. Any evidence linking members of the country’s intelligence services to a bombing on European soil would be deeply damaging.
The developments emerged just as President Volodymyr Zelenskyy arrived at a NATO summit on Tuesday, where he was seeking to strengthen Western support even as Russia continued its deadly bombardment of Ukrainian cities. A scandal implicating Ukrainian intelligence in a European attack risks complicating those delicate diplomatic efforts.
The Attack and Its Victims
The bombing itself drew widespread condemnation. Prince Albert II of Monaco previously denounced it as an odious act and said all of the principality’s security services had been mobilized in response.
While the victims have not been officially identified, police and judicial sources told French media they were Vadym Iermolaiev, a 58-year-old businessman originally from Ukraine who now holds Cypriot citizenship, along with his girlfriend and their son. Iermolaiev and his partner were hospitalized with serious injuries, while the child suffered only minor injuries.
French prosecutors allege that Berezovska, who had been living in Germany, disguised herself as a man before planting an explosive device in the entrance hall of the family’s apartment building in Monaco.
The Businessman at the Center
Iermolaiev’s background adds another layer of intrigue to the case. Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, he had been living in Monaco as part of a group of wealthy Ukrainian businessmen and politicians that independent Ukrainian media dubbed the “Monaco battalion.”
His presence there was not without controversy. In 2023, Ukraine imposed sanctions on Iermolaiev, alleging that he had maintained business ties with Russian entities operating in Ukrainian territories occupied by Moscow, including Crimea, which Russia illegally annexed in 2014.
A Trail Across Europe
Investigators have pieced together a picture of the suspect’s movements after the attack. Monaco’s deputy prosecutor said last week that the attacker fled the principality on foot into neighboring France, before continuing by car to Germany, passing through several European countries along the way, including Italy.
The route underscores the cross-border nature of the case and the challenges facing authorities attempting to unravel exactly who orchestrated the bombing and why.
An Unprecedented Attack on European Soil
The incident stands out for its rarity. Ukraine has carried out numerous lethal operations involving explosive devices, but these have typically targeted senior Russian military officers and Kremlin-backed Ukrainian officials inside Russia. There is no established precedent for such attacks taking place on European territory.
The Monaco bombing is not the only recent case raising questions about Ukrainian involvement in operations abroad. Last week, German prosecutors accused Ukrainian state authorities of ordering the 2022 explosives attack on the Nord Stream gas pipelines linking Russia with Europe, further fueling scrutiny of Kyiv’s activities beyond its borders.
The Bigger Picture
The death of Anastasiia Berezovska near Kyiv leaves many questions unanswered. With the prime suspect now dead and two men, including an intelligence officer, in custody, the investigation appears to be probing connections that could carry significant political weight.
For Ukraine, the affair arrives at a fraught moment, threatening to complicate its efforts to maintain Western backing amid an ongoing war. For Monaco, it represents a rare and shocking breach of security in one of Europe’s most exclusive enclaves. As authorities continue to piece together the truth, the case stands as a troubling reminder of how far-reaching and violent international disputes can become, even in the most unlikely of places.
