An Acton teen charged with murder in the deaths of his mother and younger brother was located in a neighboring town early Wednesday, ending an overnight search that began when his father asked police to check on the family.

Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan identified the suspect as 17-year-old Arjun Aravind during a press conference at the Acton Police Department. The victims were his mother, 45-year-old Sudha Venkatesan, and his 14-year-old brother, Siddharth Aravind.

The Charges

Aravind faces two counts each of murder, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, and assault and battery on a family or household member. He is additionally charged with theft of a vehicle and using a vehicle without authority.

He was expected to be arraigned Wednesday in Lowell Juvenile Court on the vehicle-related counts, with arraignment on the murder and assault charges scheduled for Thursday in Concord District Court.

Under Massachusetts law, anyone aged 14 or older who is charged with murder is prosecuted as an adult. That statutory provision explains the split between the two courts handling different portions of the case.

How the Investigation Began

The sequence started at 6:37 p.m. Tuesday.

Aravind’s father contacted police to request a well-being check after a visitor was unable to get into the family’s Martha Lane home, which struck him as out of the ordinary. He attempted to reach people inside by phone, grew concerned when he could not, and called for help.

Officers entering the residence found Venkatesan in a finished basement and Siddharth Aravind on the first floor. Ryan said both showed obvious signs of trauma.

The cause and manner of death have not been determined. Authorities are waiting on findings from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. No weapon has been publicly identified, and the timing of the deaths remains unclear.

Ryan noted that the father last saw Venkatesan around 7 a.m. when he left the house, and that Siddharth returned home shortly after noon from a local recreational facility.

The Search and Arrest

Investigators believe Aravind took his mother’s vehicle after the deaths. Police issued an alert for the car Tuesday evening.

Hudson and Berlin police checked the Shops at Highlands Commons as part of the search but did not locate him there.

The break came by chance. Wayland police responding Wednesday morning to an unrelated alarm at a business on Andrew Avenue spotted a vehicle matching the description in the Acton alert. Aravind was found inside and taken into custody.

Concerning Online Activity

Ryan told reporters that investigators had identified troubling behavior preceding the deaths.

According to the district attorney, Aravind had been using the internet and an AI chatbot to generate theoretical scenarios and fantasy narratives involving the killing of his family. She described it as resembling a graphic novel format, involving the creation of characters alongside questions about how such acts might be carried out.

That detail has drawn immediate attention, though several caveats belong alongside it.

Investigators have not established what role, if any, the material played in what followed. Writing violent fiction is common and overwhelmingly unconnected to violence. Prosecutors typically introduce such evidence to argue premeditation, and defense attorneys typically contest that framing. Whether a court ultimately treats it as meaningful remains an open question.

Prior Police Contact

Acton Police Chief Douglas Sturniolo said officers had dealt with Aravind on one previous occasion, roughly a year earlier, after he ran away.

Sturniolo said there had been no reports of threatening behavior associated with that incident.

Aravind attends Acton-Boxborough Regional High School.

A professional profile describes him as a student interested in technology, business, finance, and marketing, with programming experience in Java, C++, and Python, along with work in machine learning. It references robotics projects, internships at startups, and advancement to the FIRST LEGO League World Championship.

That profile has circulated widely, largely because of the gap between how it reads and what has been alleged.

Ryan described the case in unusually direct emotional terms, calling it an unspeakable tragedy and an incredibly dark day.

She singled out the father, who lost his wife and younger son and now faces criminal proceedings against his surviving child, calling it an insurmountable situation for him.

She also acknowledged the impact on the town and the school system, saying the community stands at the beginning of a long and difficult process.
