Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide Leak Reveals One Key Camera Feature Is Missing

Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide Leak Shows a Key Camera Feature Is Missing

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide is one of the most anticipated foldables on the horizon, but a fresh round of leaks has revealed a notable gap in its specs. According to a report from Tech Advisor, Samsung’s upcoming wide foldable will pack dual 50Mp cameras — yet it will drop the telephoto lens that featured on the Galaxy Z Fold 7.

For a device meant to push foldables into bold new territory, that omission is already raising eyebrows.

A Wider, More Tablet-Like Foldable

Excitement around Samsung’s wider foldable has been building for some time, and for good reason.

Alongside Apple’s expected iPhone Ultra, which is likely to launch just months later, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide signals the arrival of a new kind of device — one that leans into a more tablet-like foldable experience. It’s a fresh direction for the category, and anticipation has been high.

But one area has consistently given observers pause: the camera system.

The Missing Telephoto Lens

Early leaks had already hinted that Samsung might move to a dual camera setup rather than the full triple system found on the Galaxy Z Fold 7. Now, two separate reports — one from SamMobile and another from Dutch website GalaxyClub — appear to confirm exactly that.

According to the leaks, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide will feature a pair of 50Mp cameras:

  • A main wide camera with an f/1.8 aperture
  • An ultra-wide camera with an f/1.9 aperture for landscape shots

What’s missing is a dedicated telephoto lens. Without one, users hoping to capture close-up shots will need to crop into the main sensor instead.

That’s where the limitation becomes more apparent. Since the Fold 8 Wide reportedly won’t include the high-resolution 200Mp sensor found on the Galaxy Z Fold 7, cropping for zoom is likely to deliver only modest results. It’s a clear step back for anyone who values versatile photography.

Where the Cameras Still Hold Up

The news isn’t all disappointing, though. The dual rear cameras do bring some solid capabilities to the table.

Both cameras are expected to feature autofocus, and both should be capable of recording 8K video at 30fps — a genuinely impressive spec for a foldable.

On the front, the leaks suggest the Fold 8 Wide will carry a pair of 10Mp selfie cameras, one on the internal display and one on the external screen. That dual-selfie arrangement is a feature it shares with the Galaxy Z Fold 7.

How It Compares to the iPhone Ultra

Interestingly, Samsung may not be alone in making this compromise.

Based on leaked dummy units, Apple’s iPhone Ultra is expected to adopt a similar wide foldable form factor — and with it, similar photographic limitations. This suggests that the missing telephoto lens may be more of a current constraint of the wide foldable design than a Samsung-specific shortcoming.

For now, that places the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide in something of a second-tier position when it comes to camera performance.

The Rest of the Spec Sheet

Beyond the cameras, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide is shaping up to be a powerful device. Leaked specifications include:

  • A top-end Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor
  • A starting configuration of 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage
  • A 4,800mAh battery — notably larger than the one in the Galaxy Z Fold 7

That bigger battery, in particular, is a welcome detail, hinting at improved endurance for the larger device.

A Smarter Foldable With Gemini Intelligence

There’s also an exciting software angle to this launch.

Recent reports suggest that Samsung’s next foldables could be the first devices to ship with Google’s Gemini Intelligence feature straight out of the box. If accurate, that would give the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide a meaningful edge in the AI department, potentially offsetting some of the disappointment around the camera.

When to Expect the Launch

Samsung fans won’t have to wait too long. Recent reports indicate that the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide will be unveiled at a London-based Unpacked event on July 22.

It won’t be arriving alone, either. The device is expected to share the stage with its foldable siblings, the Galaxy Watch 9, and the much-anticipated Galaxy Glasses.

The Bottom Line

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide is shaping up to be a fascinating but slightly imperfect device. On one hand, it offers a powerful processor, a larger battery, 8K video, and the potential debut of Gemini Intelligence. On the other, the loss of a telephoto lens — and the absence of a high-resolution sensor to compensate — leaves a real gap in its camera credentials.

For buyers drawn to the new wide foldable form factor, the Fold 8 Wide still looks compelling. But anyone who relies heavily on zoom photography may want to weigh that missing telephoto lens carefully before the July 22 reveal.
