One-Year-Old Boy Killed After Mississippi Police Open Fire on Car Following Shoplifting Call

A Mississippi police shooting has left a one-year-old boy dead and another person seriously hurt after an officer opened fire on a vehicle responding to a shoplifting call. The tragedy unfolded Sunday in the northern Mississippi city of Senatobia, and authorities, along with the child’s grieving family, are now searching for answers.

The young victim has been identified as Kohen Wiley, a one-year-old who was riding in the car at the center of the incident.

What Happened

According to the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, the sequence of events began outside a Walmart in Senatobia. Kohen was in the vehicle alongside his mother and her friend after the three had left the store and gotten into the car.

The bureau, which is leading the investigation, says officers attempted to stop the vehicle. As they did, the driver reportedly steered toward them, coming close to striking one of the officers. In response, an officer fired at the car, which then drove away from the scene.

The two women rushed to a nearby hospital. There, the worst news came: Kohen was pronounced dead.

The Toll on Those Involved

The impact of the shooting fell hardest on the youngest person in the car. While Kohen’s mother escaped without physical injuries, her friend was left seriously wounded, according to Marquell Bridges, a local community advocate assisting the family.

Bridges, who serves as president and founder of an advocacy organization called the Building Bridges Coalition, has been helping the family secure legal representation as they navigate the aftermath.

A Family in Mourning

For Kohen’s relatives, the loss is impossible to put into words. His grandfather, Carlos Haynes, remembered the little boy as a joyful child whose life was just beginning.

Haynes said he had been looking forward to watching his grandson grow up. “Someone ended it all before it could even start,” he said, capturing the depth of a family’s heartbreak over a future that will never come.

Official Responses

The agencies connected to the shooting have so far said little as the investigation continues.

  • The Senatobia Police Department, which responded to the original call, did not immediately answer inquiries from the Associated Press. In a Facebook post, the department said it would share more details as the investigation progresses and facts are confirmed.
  • The Tate County Sheriff’s Office, which was also present during the shooting, declined to comment.
  • Walmart said it is cooperating with law enforcement. A spokesperson expressed sorrow over the incident, saying the company was saddened by what took place at its Senatobia store.

Where Things Stand

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Key questions remain about how a routine shoplifting call escalated into gunfire that claimed the life of a toddler.

Senatobia sits roughly 40 miles south of Memphis, Tennessee. As the investigation moves forward, the community and Kohen’s family are left waiting for a fuller account of what happened — and for some measure of accountability in the death of a one-year-old whose life, as his grandfather put it, ended before it could even start.

This is a developing story, and additional details may emerge as authorities verify the facts and release more information.
