A Rare GOP Rebuke
Republican Rep. Randy Fine of Florida sharply criticized Vice President JD Vance on Friday morning over a stark warning the vice president issued to Israel during a White House press briefing. The controversy surrounding Vance Israel comments has exposed unusual tension within Republican ranks over the administration’s handling of the conflict.
Fine didn’t mince words, calling the remarks both inappropriate and, in his view, deeply offensive.
What Vance Said
The backlash centered on comments Vance made during a Thursday briefing, in which he criticized Israel’s leadership for speaking out against a memorandum of understanding signed by President Trump earlier that week.
The agreement opened a 60-day window for peace deal negotiations and brought a halt to hostilities, a ceasefire that was meant to include Lebanon. Vance’s frustration was pointed.
“If I was in the Cabinet of the Israeli government, I might not be attacking the only powerful ally that I have anywhere left in the entire world,” Vance said.
He elaborated on the president’s frustration, explaining that just as the administration seems “right on the cusp of a major breakthrough,” a major explosion goes off in a civilian area of Beirut, killing people who have nothing to do with Hezbollah. That, he said, “is not acceptable.”
The Backdrop of Conflict
Vance’s remarks came against a tense military backdrop. Israel, a close US ally for decades, has been carrying out military actions targeting the Iran-backed Lebanese militant group Hezbollah since nearly the start of the US-Israeli war against Iran.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed in a Friday morning statement that the Israeli military had struck Hezbollah “with force” on Thursday evening, following what he described as a “heinous attack” from the militant group.
Complicating matters further, Iran has repeatedly insisted that any ceasefire with the US depends on a halt in fighting between Israel and Lebanon — placing the ceasefire in a precarious position.
Fine’s Strong Response
Fine, who is Jewish, delivered some of the harshest criticism. Speaking on the conservative network Real America’s Voice, he said he found Vance’s comments “absolutely inappropriate and frankly disgusting.”
He went further, suggesting the vice president “would be wise to go back and learn his history.” Fine emphasized the origins of the Jewish state, arguing that it was not created by the United States, nor funded by it except in some small way.
Instead, he said, Israel was created “in the blood and sweat and tears of the Jewish people rising out of the Holocaust” — a pointed reminder of the nation’s independent foundations.
Other Conservatives Join the Criticism
Fine was far from alone. Vance’s comments drew pushback from several prominent conservative voices:
- Fox News host Brian Kilmeade said he was “shocked” by the vice president’s criticism of Israel, adding that he wished Vance “would be that tough with Iran.”
- Former GOP House Speaker Newt Gingrich questioned why Israel was being blamed for trying to protect its citizens from Hezbollah attacks.
In a social media post, Gingrich laid out his reasoning, arguing that Iran funds and arms Hezbollah, encourages attacks on Israelis, and then blames Israel for defending itself. He concluded that the focus of anger should be the Iranian dictatorship, not “a democracy fighting to protect its citizens.”
A Deepening Divide
The episode highlights a growing rift within the Republican Party over how the administration is navigating the conflict. While the White House appears focused on preserving a fragile peace process, several conservative figures are pushing back hard against any criticism aimed at Israel.
As the ceasefire remains uncertain and tensions with Iran and Hezbollah persist, the disagreement over Vance’s remarks underscores just how politically charged the situation has become — even among allies who typically stand united.
For now, the controversy serves as a reminder that the path to peace in the region is fraught not only abroad, but also within American political circles.
