Pete Buttigieg CPS report dominated headlines Friday after the former US transportation secretary revealed that an anonymous and, according to police, baseless accusation prompted Child Protective Services to investigate his family. The ordeal briefly separated him from his young children and left him grappling with what he described as one of the most painful experiences of his life.
A Family Targeted by a False Claim
In a post published Friday on Substack, Buttigieg recounted the incident as being among the darkest hours he has ever faced. The accusation led to him being separated from his four-year-old twins, and he compared the experience to “swatting,” the practice of phoning police with a fabricated emergency to provoke a heavy law enforcement response.
He invited readers to picture that same tactic, but with Child Protective Services standing in for a SWAT team. He admitted the idea had never occurred to him until a police officer and a CPS worker arrived at his home and calmly asked to speak with him.
For a full day, he wrote, his family had no understanding of what he was accused of or what might come next. He described the distress of watching someone exploit the system to harm his family with an allegation he called both absurd and easily disproven.
What the Police Found
Michigan state police confirmed the episode in a statement. A department spokesperson said authorities had received an anonymous report earlier in the week and, after investigating alongside Child Protective Services, concluded the claim was false.
The spokesperson also warned about the broader dangers of such reports, noting that false claims pull law enforcement officers and CPS workers away from genuine emergencies and from protecting children and families who actually need help.
How the Allegation Unfolded
According to Buttigieg, he first learned of the accusation when an officer and a social worker knocked on the door of his family’s Michigan home. The investigation required him and his husband, Chasten, to stay apart from their children for 24 hours. During that time, Buttigieg sent the twins to stay with their grandparents.
The details of the claim were as bizarre as they were disturbing. Buttigieg explained that an anonymous caller had contacted CPS, claiming to have spoken with a woman who said she met him at a conference in Alabama years earlier. According to the caller, she alleged that Buttigieg had confessed to committing horrific violent crimes, and the caller insisted the children remained in danger. That, he said, was the entirety of the accusation.
Buttigieg stated flatly that he had never even been to the location the caller described. He characterized the whole episode as a cruel, politically motivated hoax designed to harm his family.
A Pattern of Political Intimidation
Buttigieg, viewed as a possible contender for the 2028 presidential race, pointed to the troubling timing of the incident. He noted that it came shortly after his family shared photos online for Father’s Day, and during a month meant to make families like his feel welcomed and safe.
He situated the episode within a broader trend. Swatting incidents have been climbing, increasingly aimed at elected officials and public figures. Experts warn the tactic has become a tool of intimidation as political divisions deepen. Still, Buttigieg argued that the false claims against his family represented a different and more invasive level of harassment, given that they targeted his children directly.
Vowing to Respond
As his family works through the aftermath, Buttigieg made clear he intends to pursue accountability. He wrote that he is uncertain how much can be done, but vowed that if there is any avenue to press civil or criminal charges, he will take it.
His motivation, he explained, extends beyond his own family. He wants to reinforce a boundary he believed was already universally understood, delivering a blunt message that no one should target someone’s children.
