The forensic findings have only deepened concerns about how the animals died. Forensic veterinarians managed to examine 71 of the bodies on-site Thursday but ran out of time to reach the remaining 46.

A preliminary examination, which included X-rays of the remains, revealed disturbing results. Many of the animals showed evidence of bullet fragments, suggesting they had been shot. Investigators are now working to identify any dogs that were microchipped, hoping to trace the animals back to their records.

The Founder’s Earlier Statement

Before the latest discovery, Miranda had addressed the growing attention surrounding the rescue. In a statement posted on the organization’s website on June 18, he responded to recent media coverage and online commentary.

That statement described two specific incidents that had drawn particular attention, both involving animals killed at the facility. According to Miranda, the first incident involved a dog that had killed one animal and attacked another, while the second involved a dog that lunged at a stroller carrying a baby.

Miranda defended those actions as difficult but necessary, writing that they were not decisions made lightly and were rooted in his responsibility to protect both the public and the animals in his care.

Questions Around the No-Kill Label

The statement also described Miranda’s Rescue as a no-kill shelter, a designation meaning animals are not euthanized simply to create space. Even so, Miranda acknowledged that euthanasia is sometimes unavoidable.

He maintained that he had handled such situations transparently, claiming that whenever euthanasia became necessary, he notified local authorities in advance, even in cases where he was told reporting wasn’t required. He framed this as an effort to keep a clear record of those difficult decisions.

How that account squares with the discovery of more than a hundred buried dogs, many bearing signs of gunfire, is now at the heart of an investigation that authorities say is only beginning.
