An Australian man has been charged with homicide in Thailand after the body of a 17-year-old Thai girl was discovered stuffed inside a suitcase and abandoned near railroad tracks in the beachside city of Pattaya. The suspect was detained while attempting to flee the country, in a case that has gripped headlines across both Thailand and Australia.
The Arrest
The accused, identified as Simon Peter Carman, was arrested on Saturday at Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok just as he was preparing to leave Thailand, according to police in Pattaya.
The teenage victim had been reported missing on Friday. Authorities said she was last seen in the company of a foreign man on Jomtien Beach, a detail that quickly became central to the investigation.
A Case That Drew National Attention
The girl’s death and the subsequent arrest were covered as top news in both countries. The case has also turned a spotlight back onto Pattaya, a popular tourist destination long notorious for its adult entertainment scene. In recent years, the city has tried to shed its reputation as a magnet for illicit sex tourism, making the circumstances of this case especially uncomfortable.
Local media, including The Bangkok Post, reported that the dispute leading to the killing had reportedly centered on the man’s payment for the teenager’s company.
How the Body Was Found
Investigators pieced together the suspect’s movements through surveillance footage. Police said they reviewed CCTV from a condominium near the beach that showed the girl entering the building alongside a man. The same man was later captured on camera leaving alone, carrying a large black suitcase, before driving away on a motorcycle.
At around 1:30 a.m. on Saturday, investigators located the suitcase in a thicket near railroad tracks. Inside, according to police, they found the girl’s naked body crumpled up within it. Carman’s passport was reportedly discovered in the condo unit.
The Charges
Anek Srathongyoo, a superintendent with the Pattaya police, told local reporters that Carman faced a series of grave charges, including homicide, taking or transporting a minor for indecent purposes, and concealing or destroying a corpse. Those charges, he noted, carry a maximum penalty of death.
Speaking to Reuters, Anek said the suspect claimed he had not intended to kill the victim but admitted to strangling her. According to Anek, Carman told police the two had argued, and that he strangled her during the altercation.
A Family in Shock
The teenager’s family told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation that she had traveled from her home in Kalasin, a small city in Thailand’s northeast, to Pattaya in mid-June, telling them she was going on vacation with a friend.
Her relatives described a capable young woman who sometimes sold fruit or garlands on street corners to help support her family, though they emphasized she was not forced to work. Her stepmother, Oradee Bussarakum, conveyed the family’s disbelief, recalling how they kept telling themselves it could not be their child, insisting she was smart, capable, and knew how to take care of herself.
The ABC reported that Carman was from Western Australia and had previously worked as a truck driver.
Australia Responds
The case has drawn comment at the highest levels of the Australian government. Foreign Minister Penny Wong declined to say whether consular assistance was being provided to the suspect, citing privacy obligations, but did not hold back in describing the gravity of the situation.
Wong called it a horrific case, saying that everyone had been horrified by what happened and extending her sympathy to the friends and family of the victim.
An Ongoing Investigation
As the legal process moves forward in Thailand, the case stands as a stark and tragic reminder of the dangers that can lurk behind a destination’s glittering tourist reputation. For the family of the young woman in Kalasin, the vacation she described before leaving home ended in a loss almost too painful to comprehend, while authorities continue to build the case against the man now accused of taking her life.
This article describes a violent crime involving the death of a minor, which many readers will find deeply distressing. If this subject has affected you, speaking with someone you trust or a support professional may help.
