An Australian man murder Thailand case has shocked authorities after a 46-year-old was charged with killing a teenage girl whose body was discovered inside a suitcase. The grim discovery in the coastal city of Pattaya has led to multiple serious charges against the suspect, who denies any wrongdoing.
The Charges
Pattaya City police told reporters that the accused, identified as Simon Peter Carman, has denied the charges brought against him. Authorities have laid three serious counts in connection with the death of 17-year-old Tunchanok Donhomla:
- Murder
- Concealing a corpse in an attempt to hide the cause of death
- Abduction of a minor over 15 but not yet 18 years of age for indecent purposes
Carman denied all three charges, according to police.
A Grim Discovery
The case began with the disappearance of Donhomla in Pattaya, located on Thailand’s eastern Gulf coast. Carman was arrested at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi airport on Friday evening in connection with her vanishing.
After questioning him in the early hours of Saturday morning, local police in Pattaya located a naked body inside a suitcase near railway tracks. They subsequently identified the victim as Donhomla, confirming the worst fears about her fate.
The Suspect’s Account
In video footage captured while Carman was in custody, obtained by the ABC and other outlets, he addressed the victim’s family directly. He expressed remorse over what had happened to their daughter, insisting that the events were out of his control.
In the footage, Carman conveyed his sorrow and acknowledged the family’s grief, saying he hoped they would be okay while admitting he knew they would not be. He even offered a warning to other young women, urging them to be careful. The video also appeared to show scratch marks on his upper arms and neck, which he attributed to spider bites, claiming spiders frequently got into the area.
Local Thai media reported that Carman pleaded not guilty, telling police he had acted in self-defense, which resulted in Donhomla’s death. According to the Thairath news website, the alleged crime stemmed from a disagreement over money, specifically a dispute over the charge for Donhomla’s time.
Damning CCTV Evidence
Surveillance footage reviewed by reporters and verified by police appears to chart a disturbing timeline of events. The CCTV evidence allegedly captures several key moments:
- Shortly after 3:30 a.m. on Thursday, Carman and Donhomla are seen holding hands in a condo lobby while waiting for an elevator.
- Between 9:25 p.m. and 9:48 p.m. that evening, footage allegedly shows Carman dragging the suitcase out of the building and leaving on a motorbike with it strapped behind him.
- Between 9:57 p.m. and 10:06 p.m., he is allegedly seen returning without the suitcase.
This sequence of images forms a critical part of the case against him.
A Father’s Grief
The victim’s father, Thongchai Donhomla, spoke of his profound sorrow as he struggled to process the loss of his daughter. He shared that she had no mother and had always found ways to provide for herself whenever she needed something, while also helping him. His words painted a portrait of a resourceful young woman whose life was cut tragically short.
What Comes Next
Under Thailand’s criminal code, a murder conviction can carry severe consequences, ranging from 15 to 20 years’ imprisonment to the death penalty. The stakes for Carman could not be higher.
He remained in custody at Pattaya City court on Sunday and is scheduled to appear in court on a date yet to be determined. As the legal process moves forward, the case continues to draw attention to the vulnerability of young people and the devastating impact of violent crime.
This is a distressing subject involving the death of a young person. If reading about it stirs up difficult emotions, it may help to talk with someone you trust or reach out to a support professional.
