A devastating Canoga Park murder-suicide has left a father and his two 10-year-old twin sons dead, according to police, casting a shadow of grief over a quiet Los Angeles neighborhood on Sunday evening.
What Happened
The Los Angeles Fire Department responded to reports of a shooting in the 8000 block of Owensmouth Avenue at approximately 7:15 p.m. on Sunday. When first responders arrived, they pronounced three people dead at the scene.
The Los Angeles Police Department later confirmed that investigators are treating the deaths as a murder-suicide. According to officials, the boys’ father is believed to have been responsible.
A Scene of Heartbreak
Aerial footage from AIR7 captured a heavy law enforcement presence surrounding an apartment complex located next to a baseball field. Outside the crime tape, a crowd of onlookers had gathered, many struggling to comprehend what had taken place.
A crew on the ground witnessed the raw emotion of the moment as family members wept and held one another. Some stood in silence, visibly shaken by the loss.
“That’s just really sad. Two little kids and a dad. That’s a family. Nobody deserves that,” one woman at the scene said.
A Community in Mourning
The home where the tragedy unfolded sits directly across from Lanark Park, where families had been enjoying an ordinary Sunday before police flooded the area. As word spread, friends, relatives, and even complete strangers came by to pay their respects.
One woman explained why she felt compelled to stop, even without knowing the family personally:
“I felt like, even though we might not see their family, we thought that they needed some prayer and some thought… I would want to pray for someone’s healing… because that’s really sad and I don’t wish that upon anybody.”
Detectives spent hours moving in and out of the residence, collecting evidence and piecing together the events that led to the deaths.
The Investigation Continues
Authorities say the investigation remains active as detectives work to determine exactly what happened and what may have motivated the tragedy. As of now, the possible motive has not been released.
